It has been claimed that sufferers of the asbestos cancer, mesothelioma, as well as sufferers of other forms of cancer could find that they are able to breathe far more easily through taking part in yoga sessions. A report claims that yoga could help patients to control their breathing more easily and put their body at ease.
Officials have said that in many cases cancer patients do not feel that they have enough strength to take part in yoga, especially if they are receiving certain treatments that can leave them drained. However, research has found that those that do try it have found it to be very beneficial to their breathing, relaxation, and overall wellbeing. One cancer patient who took part in yoga classes said: “Chemo left me in a pretty bad state as far as my physical ability. But everybody talked about the importance of physical activity, and yoga seemed to be a good start.” She added: “I took my mom with me for comfort. I didn’t know what to expect. But the others had cancer, too. And the facilitator made sure everyone was comfortable with props, modifications, whatever it took. After the first class I was fine.”
One doctor involved in yoga therapy said: “Our instructors know both cancer and yoga. They not only learn the seven- week yoga program, they also learn about cancer treatments and side-effects.” Speaking of the participants, she also said: “They learn to reconnect with their breath and their body again. There’s that unique body-mind connection. When someone’s going through cancer, everything seems out of control.”
