It will be a couple of short months before the summer season will once more be upon us. Backyard BBQ enthusiasts will be cooking up a storm. While the adults love a great T-bone on the grill, the youngsters might prefer something like the more pedestrian Corn Dog. It is such a simple concept, a hot dog on a stick, dipped in batter, and fried. In fact the modern Corn Dog can be made ‘healthier’ by putting then in the oven, or even the microwave. I can not think of a simpler dish to make for the younger crowd.

My good friends Mannie Barling and Ashley F. Brooks went ‘undercover’ and snapped this picture of the ingredient list on a package of Corn Dogs.

My initial idea was to slog through the ingredient list, and find hidden MSG, Salt, Sugar, and the other general abuse of chemicals that Big Food tend to use in their deceptive labels.

There are plenty examples to be found on the label of hidden ingredients containing MSG. But what caught my attention was the curious term ‘Mechanically Separated Chicken’. In my mind I had an image of chickens walking down a line and some ‘mechanical voice’ asking an inane question and based on yes or no, a gate opened.

I watched this video, and I realized that my idea was completely wrong.

After the breast meat, legs, and wings have been harvested there are are still good pickings to be had. Just throw the remains into the magic box and voilla, you have ‘paste’ in one box, and ‘stuff’ in the other!

I am the first to admit that I am an adventurous eater, but even I get a little queasy about eyeballs and ‘nads.

The Video of the Mechanical Chicken Separator led me to this video:

All I wanted to do was draw attention to the chemicals that are being added to our foods. I did not even get close. But, I am far from done with this subject.

I suppose the high spot is that the next time little Johnny does not finish his Corn Dog or Chicken Nuggets you can just put them in a bucket of warm water and mop the floor with them. To misquote the Corn refiners Association ‘Ammonia is ammonia’. Lets face it, everyone needs some ammonia in their diet!
