Exposure to sunlight (the largest source of vitamin D) and consumption of fish and diary products rich in Vitamin D can reduce the risk of breast cancer, according to a new study conducted in UK. Scientists have found that the levels of vitamin D in those patients with advanced stages of breast cancer were much less, when compared to those in the early stages of the disease. However, they are not able to establish the reasons behind the difference in the vitamin D levels. Doctors believe that low levels of vitamin D can lead to the progression of some forms of cancer, including the breast cancer.


Scientists are not able to explain whether the low levels of vitamin D are the cause or the consequences of advanced stages of breast cancer, but they believe that vitamin D boosts the activity of certain types of key genes, that are important in controlling the cell cycle. Dr. Carlo Palmieri, the lead author of this study, said that this relation between vitamin D and certain key genes could explain why, low-level of vitamin D leads to the progression of breast cancer.


The findings of this study will be published in the Journal of Clinical Pathology.
