NBC officials say Meredith Viera has made a “smooth” transition into her new role as Matt Lauer’s co-host of the Today show. Viera joined the show in September after Katie Couric left to host the CBS Evening News. The viewers seem to like Viera assuming Couric’s role as the show remains the top-rated morning show. Executive producer Jim Bell says, “It’s been too smooth. It’s been too good. As great a story as it has been for us, it’s just been seamless and that may be why it hasn’t drawn as much attention. That’s fine, I guess. We’re more than thrilled, obviously, with the results.”

Other new co-hosts have been making waves lately. According to reports, Couric’s ratings have been slipping. Couric reportedly has been the subject of scrutiny regarding her ratings, her introduction of an opinion segment and her quest for a signoff slogan. Rosie O’Donnell made waves recently when she got into an argument with Kelly Ripa on ABC’s The View by calling Ripa a homophobe and calling American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken a homosexual. The argument stemmed from a statement Ripa made on her show Live with Regis and Kelly when Aiken covered her mouth during an interview. Ripa said, “I don’t know where that hand’s been, honey”, a statement that angered O’Donnell. O’Donell said on The View, “If that was a straight man, if that was a cute man, if that was a guy that she didn’t question his sexuality, she would have said a different thing,” a statement which Ripa denies. The women reportedly have made up.
