A widow from Leicester in England is to take action against the local council in a bid to get compensation for the death of her late husband, who died from the asbestos cancer known as mesothelioma. Leicester City Council was her late husband’s former employer, and she is suing for three hundred thousand pounds.

Roger Norton died in 2006 from the asbestos related cancer, and was aged sixty seven when he passed away. His widow, Janice Norton, is now trying to get compensation on behalf of the grandfather of six. He had worked as a painter and decorator for the council for eleven years, from 1969 to 1980.

The lawsuit claims that the council was negligent because if failed to take measures or provide equipment to protect the deceased from the dangers of asbestos exposure, which can lead to this deadly form of cancer as well as other serious health problems.

The council in question has failed to comment on the lawsuit or the case, other than to state: “This case is proceeding before the courts and therefore we can’t comment at the present time.”
