Although the tablet is making quite a stir in computing technology, the best web designers begin their initial designs on paper. Each web designer may have a preference – bound, unbound, unlined, lined, ridged or smooth. Although the materials vary, the objective remains the same. The goal of early explorations in web design is to get an idea of a number of ideas and concepts that can be viewed concretely.

It is true that a designer’s tools have not changed much. However, the sketch has transformed in the sense that it is done more deliberately and custom tailored to client preferences. This versatility leads to better feedback and gives way to collaboration between the client and the web designer.

Nonetheless, sharing sketches with collaborators and colleagues is still a challenge. Sketchbooks have their limitations because not everyone in a team can view a sketch properly, particularly in large groups. More than that, web designing is now a global phenomenon, where people from around the world might be involved in creating a design or web page. In this regard, the digital template allows users to share sketches and this is very important.

Most often, scanning is shared in an office. Hence scanning images becomes a tedious procedure. On the plus side, they do produce excellent images of good quality. If there is sufficient lighting, taking a photo with a cell phone or a digital camera may work just fine. In essence, what web designers really want is a digital version of a sketchpad and pencil. Most people also like moving around, without being tied down to a desk as is the case with a PC. Here the touchscreen tablet has made an innovative contribution because it is very much like a sketchpad.
