I filed this story under the category of Religious News, but I will be frank with you, I was sorely tempted to open up a new category Religious Whining. Because that is this is what it is. The Love Guru is likely a mediocre movie at best, and if the lunatic fringe would leave it alone it would have a one week run in the theaters and then gently rot on the shelves of Blockbuster.
Of course Reno, Nevada based self nominated Hindu leader Rajan Zed does not agree. In the latest piece of rubbish that masquerades as a press release, Mr. Zed wants the movie to get an NC 17 rating. This, I would say, is about as likely as Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs being shown on the Playboy channel. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) that operate the movie ratings system have currently certified the movie with a rating of PG 13.
Mr. Zed says “it appears to be lampooning Hinduism and Hindus and using Hindu terms frivolouslyâ€. Now this sentence alone leads me to believe that he has not seen the movie. In fact, to the best of my knowledge no-one other than studio insiders have seen it. But I’ll bet a buck it is just a harmless movie.
One of the ways that movie companies market new releases is using viral marketing on the internet. A web site, a forum, maybe even a YouTube appearance or three. Paramount/Viacom don’t need to engage a web weenie for this release, our self proclaimed Hindu leader Rajan Zed is doing it all for them! Mr Zed has about as much credibility as Michael Jackson running a ‘boys only’ Day-Care.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackHow incredible that you, a non-Hindu, would claim that a Hindu’s reactions to a movie with potetnially offensive references are asinine. How can you possibly know what the “offended” feel? Thus what gives you the right to call their reactions asinine? I am not offended by the movie – hey it’s just Mike Myers – but I am offended by your attitude.
Our country was founded for religious tolerance but sometimes because of the “political correctness” of our day and time things blow into outrageous proportions. I was born and raised Pentecostal Holiness. The majority of my friends were and are Southern Baptist. I have heard the term “Holy Roller” so many times. Yes it hurt my feelings when I was younger and offended me as I grew older. I explained my religion and many of my friends went to church with me. I did not whine about that offense. of the last things I want to hear is someone complaining about how unfair it is that someone can attack their religion. You live in the United States of America. You have the right to practice your religion freely and without persecution. Do not attempt to force your religion on someone who does not wish to hear it. I am not speaking of ANY ONE RELIGION. Respect has gone by the way side in this country.
I like how the only protests to the Indian censor board seem to have come from groups based in the US. Most of us in India quite like the film.
Yeah, when Deepak Chopra says it is in the right spirit and should not be taken too seriously, then I stop worrying. He is a very intelligent and sensitive man who also has a sense of humor, and whom I respect.
