The subject of vaccines and children is a contentious one. On paper it sounds like a great idea, at an early age you can protect your baby from diseases that 100 years ago contributed in part to the high infant mortality rates. I doubt that anyone would wish to see such things as polio return to an everyday occurrence.

But there also is the question of at what point do we say enough is enough?

Today’s toddler by age three has received 33 stabs with the needle.

The investigative team of Mannie Barling, Ashley F. Brooks, and Simon Barrett decided that it was time to start peering into this murky world and ask the big question WHY?

It would have been simple to put on a program mired in the science and politics of the subject, but that really does nothing more than prove we researched it. We decided instead to invite a mother and grandmother to join us to get her thoughts on the subject.

We wanted the Lay Persons views, and with a small amount of deception lured my wife Jan Barrett to be the victim de jour. I am sure that the cuts and bruises I suffered from the beating (I richly deserved after the program) will heal quickly 🙂

One thing was very apparent, you do not need science to explain common sense! Mothers have been nurturing babies for a very long time. They have a very special gift, the ability to sense danger and protect their child. Yes that does sound like a line from the National Geographic Channel, but it is true.

A mothers instincts often beat modern science. I noticed that as the program progressed she became more and more animated.

They put WHAT in the vaccine!

In retrospect it was a very unfair thing that I did to Jan. She had no idea what my motives were, I assured her that all we needed was 5 or 10 minutes of her time. 75 minutes later she was still on the program! Hours after we ended the program she was still asking me questions!

I think I will shamelessly steal a line from the TV commercial for

You don’t have to know what you are looking for, you just have to look

This catch phrase is so true. You do not need a PhD to figure out that Wile E Coyote in the Bugs Bunny cartoons probably was making a bit of a mistake by strapping rockets on his back in order to outrun the rabbit. Common sense tells us this is bad. It is funny, but it is not something that we would do. Common sense gets in the way. I was about nine years old when I explained to my parents that I wanted to build a roadway from my upper floor bedroom to the lawn. I would then be able to climb in my (not yet built) Batmobile and save the world. I was crushed when they said no! But it was common sense at work!

What I am seeing happen today in the medical world is a lack of common sense. My Batmobile was going to save humanity. I even had a plastic raincoat that I was sure could have been converted into a pretty good cape.

My parents also nixed the idea of me building a Dalek, but that is another story.

The point is, they used common sense. What we are seeing in the health industry is not common sense, but the need to make the bottom line. It has little to do with health care, but everything to do with the profits.

When it comes to food and drugs (legal ones) we seem to have lost that common sense.
