Usually on this site we ask for help in finding missing children, we do what we can to focus on Amber Alerts. Now however the FBI have need for our help to locate some missing equipment.

The MSM has been somewhat quite on the whole warrantless wire tapping by Federal Agencies that somehow crept into the system following 9/11 and the patriot act.

While much of the grumbling concerned a secret room in a large AT&T facility that supposedly was supplying a mirror image of all internet traffic to the NSA, there was also a small and mostly ignored story about the FBI happily affixing GPS units to vehicles of people that they wished to monitor.

That story gained legs with releasing this article.

Lets face it, if you were to find this stuff stuck to your car, wouldn’t you be just a little curios?

Well, the whole FBI GPS story finally hit the Supreme Court. As the saying goes, the stuff hit the fan.

The Wall Street Journal has a great article. It is well worth reading.

Some of my favorite bits:

the court ruling prompted the FBI to turn off about 3,000 GPS tracking devices that were in use.

But of course this has created a whole other problem. These are not $100 TomTom units from BestBuy, these are expensive bits of Hi-Tech. And they want them back:

After the ruling, the FBI had a problem collecting the devices that it had turned off, Mr. Weissmann said. In some cases, he said, the FBI sought court orders to obtain permission to turn the devices on briefly – only in order to locate and retrieve them.

Herein lays the rub, the Supremes ruled in part that the placement of the devices constituted trespass. Will they now be forced to break the law again to retrieve them? What if these devices have been in place for months? At what point does the car owner own them? How soon before they are for sale on eBay? How many will simply disappear?

How many people will have an FBI agent knock on their door?

Hi I am agent Fred Blow of the FBI, and I want to crawl under your car to recover our very expensive GPS bug that we planted a while back.?

This story is just starting! But it is an interesting one.
