Susan Powell has been missing since December 7, 2009. She is a wife and a mother of two from West Valley City, Utah. Her husband, Josh Powell has now been named as a person of interest in the investigation.
Authorities claim that Josh Powell has not been very cooperative in helping them with the investigations as they try to locate his wife. They need him cooperation in providing the details of what may have happened that night she disappeared. An Assistant Chief Craig Black told Fox News. “We’ve been interested in what Josh has had to say all along … I wouldn’t characterize him (Joshua) as being cooperative.â€
According to Josh he claims he took their children camping the same night that Susan disappeared but Susan’s family says this raises a hugs red flag. Josh says he took the kids ages 2 and 4 to the Pony Express Trail to go camping in the family’s van. He says they went around 12:30 in the morning but the night they supposedly went the weather outside was freezing cold in very low temperatures. One of Susan’s close family friends, Shelby Gifford, told authorities, “Susan would not have tolerated her children being taken out of the home after midnight to go camping in dangerously cold conditions.
Susan’s family and friends find it no surprise that Josh Powell has now been named as a
person of interest given the events and reaction to them in the past week.
Susan’s phone, purse and her keys were found inside her home which causes some suspicions. Shelby Gifford’s husband Michael says, “She would never leave her home without her… cell phone, especially if her children were gone camping in the kind of conditions that they had gone camping.â€
According to the family and friends Susan and Joshua Powell’s marriage has been strained lately, citing financial and emotional stresses.
Susan Powell is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. Anyone knowing about where Susan Powell please call the West Valley Police Department at 801-840-4000.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThis guy obviously got rid of his wife, his story is so ridiculous. To not even be willing to show the police exactly where his “camping spot” is…it’s painfully obvious he’s guilty of causing her “disappearance”.
He doesn’t look or sound very intelligent. Hopefully it won’t be too long before he cracks, and her family will be able to know what happened to her.
The only thing I’m surprised about is that it took LE so long to name this guy a person of interest! What MAN takes their 2 and 4 year old children camping in the dead of winter at 12:30 in the morning? He won’t cooperate, won’t show them where he went camping, etc. NONE of it adds up. Arrest him already! He’s guilty and it is unfortunately obvious his wife is no longer living. He sure didn’t think this out very well. Someone with an IQ of 5 could have come up with a better story. Only one thing worse than a murderer and that is a STUPID murderer….although it does make catching them MUCH easier!
He probably waited till the two little boys fell back to sleep in the car, then tossed her body down an embankment somewhere along the way to his “camping” destination. Soon after, the snow would have covered the body. If I were LE, I’d retrace that route. He couldn’t have gone far out of the car. Are there any cliffs in that vicinity?
I, too, can’t stand the “person of interest” label, either. Whatever happened to “SUSPECT”?? Nowadays, they have to tip-toe around, and be all “politically correct”. Bah, humbug!!
I live in that area and am familiar with the West desert where Josh said he camped. If he were to have driven to Simpson Springs, it would be at least a 90 mile drive and 50 of those miles are off the highway on a dirt & gravel road in the snow in his rear-wheel drive mini-van!
What has bungled this case is that Josh’s church refused to face the fact that he could do such a thing to his wife, so they refused to cooperate with those of us who wanted to search. No vehicle description, no clothing last worn, and not a clue as to what locations this guy likes to camp! They all claimed Josh was innocent. Any postings on their site about searches were immediately deleted. Finally, 11 days after Susan went missing, they are starting to face reality and organize a search, but I guantee there will be too much snow by the time they finally get it together. I’ve been out searching and will continue tomorrow. We only have 3 days left before the snow hits again, but I just feel everyone has been sitting on their arses long enough on this case.
This case is a sad case, and Susan’s husband looks like he has had some sort of mental break. I hope they get those kids away from him, before he does himself in, and possibly them in.
I’m intrigued by the only vocal inflection I’ve heard in husband’s voice, the first interview when he was asked if he went to ” some other spot” I don’t remember the name…he said no!, oh no, ….I think that is perhaps that’s a very good place to look.
LindaOz! Wow! Helping to search! That’s wonderful of you! Please stay warm, safe and healthy!
One report I read said that when LE entered the house they found fans drying a wet spot on the floor. I wonder how long it takes for forensics to test that? Or if LE was even able to get permission to test that floor quickly enough?
I sure hope this does not turn into another long drawn out case like those of Scott and Drew Peterson! Although both were eventually caught, Drew is still not yet convicted (is he?). What a nightmare for Susan’s family and the children and I also hope someone can get the kids away from that man for their own safety!
M2c – Susan’s father and sister had come down from Washington and were caring for the children, but recent went back and now they are back with their father. The first time police entered the home it was on a welfare check so after seeing the fans and getting more details they had to get a search warrant to re-enter the house to take a few items. Seems like it took them a week to actually take samples from the carpet for forensics so things are moving very slowly, but I do think there will be an arrest shortly. They seem to be closing in on this guy. What has really slowed the case down are his Mormon friends protecting him and refusing to release needed information for Susan’s search. We are starting to search along a marina area on Salt Lake this morning and if time, back out to the West desert. It’s frustrating because it would be so easy to narrow this search down, but no one is cooperating. It’s like a sophistocated Satsuma around here!
This time I’m bringing rope before I go into any wet areas. The other day on what I thought was solid ground I suddenly slipped up to my thigh in mud but was able to pull myself out with surrounding brush. That was a weird feeling!

Arrest this man already he is GUILTY and is hiding so much! He was the last one to see her alive, this story breaks my heart and I wish he would just be a REAL man and confess for his childrens sake and let everyone sleep! My prayers go out to the family and those poor kids!!!
And I personally think the cops should investigate a little more with the husband! Maybe even him take a lie detector test!
