The Gulf Oil Spill Uptate

I was joined by my regular panel, the husband and wife research and writing team of Mannie Barling and Ashley Brooks.

Our plan was to explore the ramifications of two current news stories. The oil pollution in the Gulf of Mexico caused by the BP disaster on the Deep Horizon drilling rig. Our second segment concerned the possible ramifications of Genetically Modifies Atlantic salmon.

Joining for the Gulf oil discussion was Joannie Hughes, a founding member of the Coastal Heritage Society of Louisiana, a grass roots organization that has become very much the voice of the regular person in the region that has been effected by the BP disaster.

Regular listeners to the series know the background and credentials of Mannie Barling and Ashley Brooks. But I will quickly recap. Mannie Barling spent more than 30 years as an attorney before being retiring due to health problems. His wife Ashley Brooks is a retired R.N. who has a great depth of knowledge on the subject of health and nutrition. For the past 13 years they have been aggressively researching the effects of artificial chemicals in our food and the adverse results on the human body.

Mannie and I have joked on the phone about how being an interviewer and an attorney have similarities. In the court room you only ask questions that you already know the answers to. Good interviewers work in a similar fashion. I do not run with a script, I merely have an outline. But, generally speaking I know through research what my guests are going to say.

That went completely out of the window with this radio broadcast. I knew that Joannie Hughes and her group have been sponsoring a number of independent rain water and air quality studies, and this what where I thought she would begin.

Instead she informed us that she wanted to start with some good news. Plaquemine parish president Billy Nungesser is so fed up with BP and BS that he has started his own clean up effort. He has recruited people that have found themselves without employment because of the spill. Hopefully BP will pay the bill, but who knows!

In a 7 day period this group removed 37,000 gallons of oil and 12,000 contractor sized garbage bags (far larger than your average leaf bag in the garden) of tar balls. All of this was from a small 20 square mile of marshland!

There was a collective GASP from the panel. In fact I thought that I had misheard the data and asked Joannie Hughes to repeat it.

I want to try and put these numbers into a perspective, the recovered oil is enough to fill more than 1600 gas guzzling Hummer H3’s!

This is not an oil spill, this is death to both a lifestyle and a very fragile part of the wet lands ecosystem.

I think I speak for both Mannie and Ashley (and millions of others) when I say kudos to Billy Nungesser. He is not sitting back and waiting, he is taking action! Of course the main stream media is totally ignoring the story, preferring instead to heap praise on the soon to retire Thad Allan. I wonder when he is going to announce that he has scored a fat cat deal in a politically funded lobbying Washington based Think Tank?

The subject of overall health in the region was a topic discussed at length. It is so important that we will be putting up a companion article on the subject. The thumbnail sketch of the discussion is as follows, anecdotal data reveals a high incidence of upper respiratory problems, and other health issues in the area. Hard ‘government data’ refutes this, there have only been relative trickle of complaints lodged with the various agencies. One reason for this seemingly inexplicable situation was put forward by Joannie Hughes, many of the people suffering were involved with the initial clean up effort and were forced to sign three year Non Disclosure Agreements.

I strongly recommend that you listen to this program, there is something very wrong with what is going on in the Gulf region. The entire recording can be found here.
