It is interesting how products become labeled from the supposed point of origin. A great example is China, to most people it represents deep fried chicken or pork balls, Chow Mien, and that salty black stuff we call Soy sauce.

This view could hardly be further than the truth, while it might be entirely possible that Chicken and Pork balls are available in some marketplaces, they are not the deep fried delight wrapped in batter that we in the west prefer.

Chow Mien will not be found on any menu in China, it is wholly a western invention. Stories abound about the origin. The one I subscribe to involves the building of the rail system across both Canada and the US. Cheap Chinese labor was employed to cook and clean for the men driving the spikes. If you follow the progress across country as the rail system expanded, you find a steady string of Chinese Restaurants and Chinese Laundries.  Chow Mien quickly became popular in eastern cities where it became popular and legendary in New York City in the late 1880s.

That leaves us with soy.  Yes it is grown in China, but it is not the major food source that the Western marketing moguls for Big Food would have us believe.  Soy traditionally was grown as part of a crop rotation, the plant was literally plowed back under to provide nutrition for other crops.

In the latest in our Surviving The 21st Century broadcast my guests the writing and research team of Mannie Barling and his wife Ashley F. Brooks took a long hard look at soy.

One of the most disturbing aspects is that research seems to show that 90% of soy used in the US is genetically modified (GMO) Soy. Equally unsettling is how widespread the use of soy has become. Most people think of soy as being something associated solely with the vegetarian and vegan movements.  That is not true. Soy is in more than 90% of foods found on your grocery shelves.

Mannie Barling and Ashley F. Brooks have spent a years researching soy. Even in its non-GMO state, it is a substance that has inherent dangers.

The dangers have been well documented, yet also well hidden from the public. Soy is used in almost all infant formula and baby food. Food manufacturers claim that it is the ideal substitute for mothers milk! NOT!!!!!

As with HFCS and MSG, the FDA have very much turned a blind eye to soy.  I, for one, am becoming increasingly distrustful of the FDA. It is mandated to protect the US population in the areas of food and drugs, yet reality seems to show that it is merely a mouthpiece for Big Food and Big Pharma. Even more sinister is the relationship between Big Food and Big Pharma. They march in lock step.

For example, in 2008, Big Pharma alone spent more than $234 million — a sum that translates into roughly $125,000 every hour that Congress was actually in session – on lobbying alone hiring more than 30 ex-Congressmen and Senators-turned-lobbyists to promote their interests.

That amounts to about $1.2 million a day that Congress was open for business. And these figures are just a portion of their overall expenditures by Big Food and Big Pharma. They also spend big on advertising, research, polling and other efforts that don’t get classified as lobbying.

I find the statistic that 90% of all soy products in the US are GM (Genetically Modified) very disturbing. And so should you.

Week after week on Surviving The 21st Century one company name comes up, Monsanto. This company has become the champions of Genetic Modification of seeds. The most common version being referred to as ‘Round Up Ready’. Yes folks, it is the weed killer that they are talking about. I am no scientist, however my understanding is that ‘Round Up Ready’ seeds basically incorporate Round Up into the DNA, so farmers can spray to their hearts content without harming the crop. Of course this begs the question of how much Round Up have you had today?

If you doubt my observation, I read that Corporate Watch named Monsanto as the foremost “corporate criminal” in history. That puts them up there with Attila the Hun and Nazi Germany.

Soy was the first seed to be genetically modified by Monsanto, one wonders when the company will be patenting Round Up ready humans? They are already cloning cows, sheep and fish against the wishes of the majority. Will they stop there? Not!!!!!
