This new trend of parents starting to educate their children at an early age so they can better their chances of future academic success has its advantages; however, over-education can be harmful as well.  Parents need to understand that children require a playful childhood to build a healthy mental and physical foundation for their later lives.  There must be a balance of teaching and playing to create these “super children.”

Numerous studies suggest that spontaneous, unstructured play can be just as beneficial as rigorous exposure to early learning tools.  Free time allows children to develop creativity, discover personal passions, improve social relations, develop problem solving skills, and further prepare them for regimented school settings. 

Noted pediatrician and author, Dr. T. Berry Brazelton states, children that are subjected to a mass schedule of structured academic activities at an early age (2-6 years) risk, “missing the chance they have to dream, to fantasize, to make their own world work the way they want it,” thus missing an important part of childhood.
