“The difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.”
–Sarah Palin, RNC Speech
In a speech full of memorable one-liners and highlights, we picked what we thought were the top 25 quotes from Sarah Palin’s RNC speech in Minneapolis, MN.

* A writer observed: “We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty, sincerity, and dignity.” I know just the kind of people that writer had in mind when he praised Harry Truman.
I grew up with those people. They are the ones who do some of the hardest work in America … who grow our food, run our factories, and fight our wars. They love their country, in good times and bad, and they’re always proud of America. I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town.
* I’m not a member of the permanent political establishment. And I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.
But here’s a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion — I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country. Americans expect us to go to Washington for the right reasons, and not just to mingle with the right people.
* My fellow citizens, the American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of “personal discovery.” This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn’t just need an organizer.
* Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America’s energy problems — as if we all didn’t know that already. But the fact that drilling won’t solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all.
* Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown.
And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a “community organizer,” except that you have actual responsibilities.
* To confront the threat that Iran might seek to cut off nearly a fifth of world energy supplies … or that terrorists might strike again at the Abqaiq facility in Saudi Arabia … or that Venezuela might shut off its oil deliveries … we Americans need to produce more of our own oil and gas. And take it from a gal who knows the North Slope of Alaska: we’ve got lots of both.
* …there is much to like and admire about our opponent.
But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform — not even in the state Senate.
* In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.
* And though both Senator Obama and Senator Biden have been going on lately about how they are always, quote, “fighting for you,” let us face the matter squarely.
There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you … in places where winning means survival and defeat means death … and that man is John McCain.
* I might add that in small towns, we don’t quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren’t listening. We tend to prefer candidates who don’t talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI think you should include the companion piece … you know, the one that wasn’t written by professional RNC speech writers. It’d include my personal favorites like her 2006 support for the “bridge to nowhere,” decried by McCain: “Yes. I would like to see Alaska’s infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now — while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.”
Then there’s her acute understanding of the position she was tapped to run for: “As for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question.”
The list goes on and on … memorable quotes from the REAL Palin, not the talking head taking cues from speechwriters. I’ll leave you with this quote from her understanding of Iraq: “Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God,” she said. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God’s plan.”
The quotes were great and certainly garnered a lot of attention, but I agree with the previous comment that we need to see both sides, and certainly beyond the speechwriters. And I would really like to know the truth about whether she initially supported the bridge to nowhere. In her speech last night she said she declined federal money for it, but in other news reports she is cited for being open to the federal support.
More people have died in the name of one God or another in wars. People who think that the war in Iraq was somehow ordained by God is dangerous. Pit Bull, well good for her. If people think that that is what we need or the way things will be accomplised in and international area then you deserve whatever happens if she’s elected.
Alaska residents receiving payments from the State because of oil revenues, Alaska has been doing that for years, NOT because of her. I’m a former Republican, all the way back to Barry Goldwater and before. Eight years of Bush, disconnected and with out a clue has made me probably a Democrat for the rest of my life. Oh yes, and Iraq, we only went there because Saddam Hussien “tried to kill his daddy.” NOT Afghanistan where we should have put our efforts, now having to return there because “Mission WASN’T Accomplished”.
All I have to show is this quote fomr Sarah, dated 9-17-08:
This just in: For the first time, Palin answered a question on-the-fly from journalists this morning at a diner in Ohio. Her response to the AIG bailout:
“Dissapointed that taxpayers are called upon to bailout another one,” she said. “Certainly AIG though with the construction laws that they’re holding and with the insurance that they are holding very, very impactful to Americans so you know the shot that has been called by the Feds its understandable but very, very disappointing that taxpayers are called upon for another one.”
A writer observed: “We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty, sincerity, and dignity.” This is a quote by Westbrook Pegler, a known racist and anti-semite. Is this the type of person we want leading all Americans.
I’m sorry but everything this woman represents is not only terrifying, but wretched. Sure, speechwriters can spin a fanciful little tale for her to proclaim to the masses, but when has she ever tried to thoroughly defend her position past actually knocking down and not even bothering to consider the opposition? At least Obama has the sense to acknowledge that there are a vast range of opinions to satisfy, Palin’s practically on a power trip and won’t listen to anything but her “faith”, which isn’t at all what our country is built upon. Our country is going to suffer greatly if McCain and her get elected into office.
You talk about scary?? Take a look at the Obama ticket (whether it has Byden or Clinton makes no difference on the other end). Your guy promises health care to everyone, a pull out of iraq and a focus on domestic issues…sounds great, until you think about HOW we’re going to pay for all that health care (hello…is that a tax increase I hear?!?!), heaven forbid another 9/11 has to occur to remind people that we are in a struggle that won’t end simply because we sit down and TALK to our enemies. Call me simple minded, but if I’ve got it straight the 9/11 terrorists and the countries that support and fund them are just that…terrorists bent on destroying our country…do you REALLY think they want to simply talk with us?? Please…
Your country could have lots of money still… That same precious war you are rooting for so you can kill your so called enemy’s from 9/11 is costing you tons of money. Money that could be spend otherwise. For example healthcare or education. Besides, if you want to kill people that flew planes in your wtc you might want to start in Afghanistan. Last time I checked the big man behind it all came from Afghanistan. And now Saddam is dead. if it’s the real one anyways, and here you are. The most powerfull nation of the world, who was f****d over by Bin Laden (if if…) and after almost 8 years, you still don’t have the guy… Makes you wonder… There isn’t a single spot on this planet that someone can hide from, cause you’ll have a satelite on there. But still… you don’t have the main man. It’s very clear why… Cause the man’s dad is very good friends with your mans dad. Family’s Bush and Bin laden know eachother very well, and a lot of money came from afghanistan to the family’s Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney. 40 billion over a period of ten years came from there, to be pumped in company’s. Coincidental ofcourse that these where the company’s where men like: Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld had the power… like exxon mobil for example… I do call you simple minded, for you are eating the sh*t they are feeding you… tons at a time. Your government filled you with fear, and now you prefer war over healthcare. They did a good job on you… and don’t finish your message with a “please”, for you have not taken the trouble to look at it from 2 sides… let alone the 1000 ways of looking at this… Your current President is a puppet. ignorant to what is really going on. I live in the Netherlands. and my girlfriend lives in L.A. so I can compare with my own country, and inform directly from someone who lives there. Our healthcare is fully. never a problem. if you are ill, you need to be healed. if you cut off two fingers, you don’t have to pick which one you want to keep. Let alone decide in a traumatic moment like that, which one you want to keep, for you cannot pay for both of them.
Now these examples are bad. really really bad… However let me enlighten you to a possibility… And there have been big documentary’s about it. But the vacuum you are kept in is sickening. When my girlfriend saw the news in my country, she didn’t know what she had to say. it gave her a panic attack for the truth is harsh. And kept from you. But here’s an eye opener. Did you know many stocks where sold from your defence company’s? to your leaders, and those of Afghanistan weeks before 9/11? inevitable war was coming, and they knew before you did. German, israelian, french and you own secret service warned your presidents weeks before it actually happened. but it happened none the less… Do you really think you know what the f*ck is going on with your country? Ignorance is bliss isn’t it….
