Ron Paul Interview with Solidad O’Brien on Anderson Cooper’s 360
Was He Treated Fairly?Â
Ron Paul.
Was he treated fairly in this interview? Love him or hate him, you have to admit that the guy often isn’t treated objectively by the media. It should be troubling, even for the legions of anti-Paulistinians. It’ll only be a matter of time until the GOP selects a candidate. Paul’s treatment is only a reminder of what happens when the “objective” mainstream media gets a Republican (or conservative Democrat, rare as those are these days) in their guest chair.
Was Ron Paul treated fairly in this video? We think so. But in some quarters, the above video was said to be anti-Ron Paul. It’s hard to see, but maybe it’s in the eye of the beholder. Still the point holds true about the lack of media objectivity, in general. This might just not be the best example of it.
A different opinion comes from 1000 Needles (great name, huh?) in “I Hate Solidad O’Brien”.
I HATE SOLIDAD O’BRIEN
And here you can see why:
The Ron Paul video is presented as Exhibit “A”. More from KN:

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI watched the O’Brien interview with Dr. Paul. While I didn’t think it was unfair, I thought asking him what he thinks when people call him a “flake” was puerile and inane. It sounded like a question one might expect from People or Us magazine. It’s just not serious journalism. Dr. Paul has been a congressmen for 20 years. He has a substantial voting record, has made dozens of speeches on the floor of Congress on a wide range of topics, has introduced a number of substantive bills, has managed to build a campaign based on grassroots support because he has a principled message, is opposed to income tax on philosophical grounds, and takes a number of other philosophical positions regarding the federal government. My point: There are plenty of substantive questions she could have asked him. She could easily have challenged him on his views, voting record, etc. But, instead she asks what he thinks when some people call him a “flake.” Fair or not, this is not good journalism.
The question about him being flakey was a little childish on her part, but I don’t think she really knew much about the campaign. I mean she showed an old video clip from the first or second debate. But even worse is when they introduce Ron Paul by saying that he’s a “longshot” or low in the msm polls, which is their way of saying that he can’t win. The interview hasn’t even started yet, and they’ve already written him off. Then they ask him who he would support if he doesn’t get the nomination, or if a third party run is in the works. Do you ever hear the “top-tier” candidates being asked these questions? I mean this is how seriously they take his campaign, of course he wasn’t treated fairly.
From the beginning the interview was not respectable, full well knowing that most of his supporters did not even know who he was a year ago. This man has come from the dark mist and is glowing abundantly. Not in fear of a slip up in a speech because he speaks not from the ego or pride but his foundation is plain truth. Soledad opened by stating he was tied for last and her face showed deep regret for him. She failed to show that though he stands alone in congress and in the race that truth and honor, which are almost forgotten values, still hold hope. No Ron Paul doesn’t care about the power of office or the fame he is receiving because everyday he shows the focus on the message that he has. The other candidates to me only show the greed in their eyes with their pompous speeches. I am committed to $100 a month in support and I hope you see the truth also.
No he was not treated fairly. The MSM is afraid of Ron Paul, they down play him as much as they can. Listen to Ron Paul speak one time and you can hear the passion he speaks with. It is unreal how much he cares about the people and this country. It is a shame the way he is treated. I am giving it every thing I can till he is sworn into office in 2009.
Do me a favor, watch the video again and look at Ron Paul’s backdrop and lighting. His backdrop looks like grey puke, his suit blends in with it and the light is shined right in his eyes, forcing him to squint at first. This interview was another set up. This was designed to make him look unappealing. This consistently obvious media shut-down of Ron Paul only confirms what the “nut-jobs” are saying about big business and big government aligning together to rape us all of our freedom and thus our money and will to resist.
How ’bout this: the only wingnut, moonbat wackos in this race are the phoney, fake, evil, greedy and purely ambitious Giuliani and Clinton. Giuliani is propped up by the big money Trumps and Forbes and Bush clan (“America’s Mayor”, hah … look into it folks, the guy is a doofus). Clinton is propelled by her sheer lust for power and the corporate bank high-interest money grabbers who know she will support them and think she can be elected based on Bill.
“But, what about the polls?” Give me a break, the MSM designs the damn polls. Have you ever read a poll script? They guide voters to pick their guy(s), they don’t even mention the “bottom tier” candidates. But why are they “bottom tier”, because they are never mentioned!!!
Well, asking Paul to comment on being called a “flake,” appears to be baised journalism. How many times has Giuliani been called a “jerk?” How many times as Romney been called an “idiot?” Why aren’t they being asked about various epithets hurled at them? Why ask a candidate to comment on personal attacks? They’re not relevant. Questions should be more substantive. The question appeared to be asked in order to belittle Dr. Paul.
I am a long time Ron Paul supporter. Actually , I thought the “flake” remark was somewhat a positive. He was given ample time to turn the idea of “flaky” around on those attacking him. She gave him plenty of time to answer questions. I thought she did an OK job and was fair. I think he will be able to work his “flake” comment in on the next major debate. It was a great reply.
Ken
Jimmy Carter was at 3% in “the polls” at this point in the 1976 election cycle. Dukakis and Kerry were similarly unknown. The polls mean nothing; it’s disappointing that O’Brien led the piece with this (and repeated the “dead last” .
I do give her major props for mentioning the actual figures for how many thousands of troops are in Korea, Japan, Germany, etc. 50 years after the wars in those countries. Also she didn’t interrupt him Hannity/BOR style.
But:
– her claims that he wants to “eliminate Social Security, CIA, Homeland Security” are absolutely false.
– her hypotheticals about dropping out or “who would you vote for” are insulting – would she ask Rudy, Mitt, Huck or McCain those questions?
– the “flake” question should be grounds for dismissal – at least as offensive and unprofessional as, say, Don Imus’s “ho” incident. If you google “Ron Paul flake”, you’ll find ONE freeper smear (what a surprise) and a bunch of articles about Dr. Paul meeting with fellow budget hawk Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona.
One thing I noticed on viewing the interview again is that O’Brien stumble-bumbles her way into the word “flake”. It’s almost like she’s reluctant to ask the question and was prodded into doing so by her producers or superiors.
Has anyone actually found the source of the “flake” slander? The only references I can find are those mentioning the actual interview!
I thought it was fine. They were tough questions, but fairly representative of the kind of resistance his ideas will find in the mainstream. And I DO hear people referring to him as a flake (or similar term). The most disappointing thing about this video, from the point of view of a diehard fand of Ron Paul, is he didn’t take the opportunity to disown some of he affiliations that people are using to push the ‘flake’ image. He needs to move far away from the Alex Jones, 9/11 Truther nutjobs and make it clear he’s not associated with these nutty conspiracy theorists.
He should embrace the “flake” label. Jesus was considered by some in his time to be a flake. Ghandi, too. Flakes sometimes lose and still change the world. Win or lose, this movement will continue. The apathetic have risen from their sleep and are becoming involved. I don’t think it will stop here even if Ron Paul doesn’t win the GOP nomination.
I thought this was very fair. I’m a Ron Paul supporter and it she was almost too nice.
