Last December, Congress thought they’d help us all out by banning the good old incandescent light bulb. Being the highly trained scientists that they are, Congress thought that by making rules supporting and promoting the use of CFL bulbs, they’d promote the kitschy ideas of forestalling global warming. Of course, the scariest words in the history of man are “I’m from the government and I’m here to help you,” and this idiot move by Congress is no exception.
In this case, the our government dolts thought that saving volts was better than worrying if the mercury inside the new CFL bulbs presented a contamination problem for anyone unfortunate enough to break one. It turns out that if someone were to drop and break one of these “earth saving” bulbs it would spread mercury contamination all over the house and special care must be taken to clean up the mess. Yes, the light bulbs that are supposed to save the world are poisonous to our health! (the EPA has published a 7 page instruction manual on cleaning up a broken CFL)
Well, now we can give Congresswoman Michele Bachmann of Minnesota a pat on the back for attempting to repeal the stupidity of forcing Americans to switch over to these hazardous bulbs with a bill that will repeal the requirements to get rid of the old incandescent bulbs with the Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act. (H.R. 5616)
I hope everyone calls their Congressman and urges them to support this bill. Good job, Rep. Bachmann.
MSNBC has given us the latest on the danger that these newfangled CFL light bulbs present.
Compact fluorescent light bulbs, long touted by environmentalists as a more efficient and longer-lasting alternative to the incandescent bulbs that have lighted homes for more than a century, are running into resistance from waste industry officials and some environmental scientists, who warn that the bulbs’ poisonous innards pose a bigger threat to health and the environment than previously thought.
Remember, the government is only here to help!

God Bless her!!!
I wonder how long it will take my little girl’s easy bake oven with a CFL bulb.
Let the marketplace decide which way to go on light bulbs. Energy saving bulbs are becoming the norm. Most people realize that incandescent bulbs cost them more than cfl every will in the long run.
For more info on why the CFL legislation should be repealed, take a look at this article:
How Many Congressmen Does It Take To Screw The American Public With A Light Bulb?

CFL 2-4mg of mercury
Amalgam filling in your mouth 200-300mg
Old fashioned thermometer 3000mg
The fact is CFLs have a net benefit to the environment. The amount of coal (Americas #1 energy source) needed to make the electricity for the incandescent bulbs releases far more pollution in the atmosphere. Buy high quality CFLs and recycle the dead ones!
Fluorescent lighting gives me headaches. Once I run out of real light bulbs maybe I’ll start using candles and kerosene lamps.
[…] and conservatives are arguing against the environmental impact of CFL, while traditional Democratic and liberal constituencies are saying, “it’s not […]
Thank you Congresswoman Bachmann. For medical research and facts on the medical impact of CFLs, please check the website cflimpact.com
Congresswoman Bachmann is the best hope for the many thousands who have serious medical issues with these bulbs.
Take a look at the research and documentation.
This isn’t about being “green”, it is about CFLs having deleterious effects on many people.

“lighting expert said,CFL 2-4mg of mercury

You’re missing a few things.
1. Mercury fillings are no longer the norm nowadays. Ceramic based fillings are used.
2. Digital thermometers have replaced the old fashioned mercury ones.
and lastly and most importantly.
CFLs (and fluourescent tubes in general) function by VAPORISING the mercury.
Mercury in its liquid state, while hazardous in the longer term (e.g. if you leave it on your skin it gets absorbed) is not half as dangerous as vapourised mercury that you will inhale.
And as far as ‘recycle the dead ones’, could you please let me know exactly where I can drop CFLs off? There are a few places I can but they often won’t take just one CFL, so I have to store them at my house until I have sufficient quantity to recycle.
some “fun” scenarios would be:
Dopey John wants to replace his incandescent appliance lamp in his oven. He goes to the local hardware store and buys a CFL lamp to replace the oven lamp. As he is cooking his Thanksgiving dinner, the lamp fails immediately and the tube bursts seasoning the bird with mercury!
Dopey Joe wants to replace his porch light so he goes and purchases a CFL lamp. He lives in northern Canada, and the temperature is so cold his porch lamp won’t even light. The old incandescent bulb, however would ..
Conclusion:
CFL lamps will NOT operate at the same temperature extremes as incandescent lamps. As well as posing a danger due to mercury, they won’t operate properly at temperature extremes.
I have always hated this law but it never occurred to me we could fight back. Is there anything to do to fight this law?
