The past few years admitting to people in other countries that I am an American citizen has become more and more of an embarrassment. Our relations with other countries have been at an all time low, and our economy at its worse. America, once the land of dreams has been quickly becoming the land of despair. I worried for my children’s future. I worried that they would inherit a dying country, and would find themselves trying to clean up the mess that previous generations left behind.
Last night America spoke, and elected Barack Obama as the next president of the United States in hopes that he may be able to clean up the disaster that President Bush has left behind. It was a grand moment in history, a moment that once again made me feel proud to be an American. It made me feel that my children now have a brighter future, and will grow up in a society where people are not judged by the color of their skin, but by their true meaning.
I know that my 13 year old daughter understands the depth of what happened last night, and it will be a day that she will always remember. As for my 5 year old and 6 week old baby, it warms my heart to know that they will grow up in a United States where having a black president isn’t such a big deal. To them it will be the norm, something that has already been and is more likely than not to happen again. They will read about it in their history books, and while knowing that it was a historical moment, they will not truly realize how monumental it actually was.Â
It is uplifting to know that the children of today, the adults of tomorrow, will live in a society where a person’s morals and values are more important than their race, and they will grow up in an America where anyone can be anything they want to be if they truly put their heart into it. I am proud to be an American, and I now know that my children will be proud to be Americans too.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackWhat are you Michelle Obama? As a true American, someone who’s grandfathers, cousins, husband and friends have served in the many branches of our military, I think your article is disgusting!
Do you not see people from other countries living in America proudly flying the flag of the country they were born in. They left their country for some reason, came to America to make a better life, but they are still proud of where they came from.
I have always been and always will be proud to be an American. Yes, we have been through some rough times in the past few years but we have been in rough times in the past as well and we have always pulled through. People with attitudes like yours are part of the problem.
Do you only support family members when they are doing good? have a good job? a nice car? a big home? I support America at all times, America is my family!
We’ll see how much the mighty Obama “changes” things. God Bless us all
I am also a member of the military–Army. However, I am in no way going to start off by negating your personal feelings about America in any way. You can feel about this country however you want to feel about it. I and many like me have fought for that right and I would be willing to fight for it again if necessary. Your ability to express your feelings openly is also part of the beauty of this country that I love so dearly.
Now, I may not agree with your sentiment, but I would never try to shut you down. As a matter of fact, I have and always will be ready to soldier-up to make sure you can say whatever your 1st Amendment rights allow you to say.
Liberty is a right, freedom is a precious gift, and patriotism is what protects them both.
Hey if you two cry babies need some tissue I will mail you a box.
TRUE AMERICAN! LMAO!
That was a riot man, seriously! I think you forgot to add “backwoods redkneck” to your name title but its ok.
Hey by the way, I am guessing out of High School you were to dumb for college right? Luckily uncle same gave you something to do outside of a sheltered workshop!
God Bless this country, nothing wrong with it, the OP is all wrong! We should be proud of the lowest employment rates ever, the worst economic times since the great depression and the pointless wars that keep on killing our countrymen.
<3 BUSH, we really should of let McCain play the game for another 4 years.
being proud of your country is redneck?
and before you tell someone they are “to dumb” for college, it is TOO dumb
calling people names and trying to belittle them is exactly what is going to make America better. good thing there are people like you around, your mother must be so proud
