The toy manufacturer Planet Toys has recently filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy as a result of a class action lawsuit that it faces over a toy that was allegedly contaminated with asbestos. The Chapter 7 petition was filed earlier this week in New York.

The toys in question were toy crime scene kits that were based on the popular television programme CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Officials from the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) claimed in 2007 that the crime scene toy kits contained asbestos.

The crime scene kits were pulled from the shelves last year after Planet Toys as well as the CBS Corp were sued by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization. The toy company also faced the class action lawsuit, and according to reports plaintiffs have until the end of March to file a motion in order to certify the suit.

Speaking about the powder in the kits that were being sold one attorney stated that the “powder has been marketed and sold to thousands of children who are told to spread it around and blow off the excess. It’s a shame that we’ve had to resort to litigation to force these companies to do what they should have done in the first place to protect the American public.”
