Six Philippine sailors have been kidnapped in Nigeria, prompting President Arroyo to call for a ban on Filipino OFW working in that country.

The ship was German run but owned by a company registered in Dubai, and the Philippines is asking the ship owners to intervene.

One news source said they were kidnapped by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), which is asking for the release of a prisoner held under the custody of the Niger federal government. Others deny this.

This is not the first incident where this group has targeted Philippine citizens. Three oil workers were kidnapped last year and held hostage.

M.E.N.D. is one of several insurgent groups in Southern, oil rich Nigeria, but unlike the other groups, has not promoted local independence of the Niger delta from Nigeria. However, there is resentment by many local tribes that they are not sharing in the oil revenues from their own land. LINK
