I have a great aversion to music advertised on late night TV, The best of, The greatest love songs, etc, which is usually followed by the “operators are standing by” message. And I have to admit that when I first saw this DVD I was pretty leery about what I was going to find inside. My worries were unfounded, this is a very fun DVD, and it contains some classic songs that are performed by some classic artists.

There is not much in the way of information about when these great videos were made, but I have tracked down the where it was made to The Rock ‘n Roll Palace in Orlando, Florida. As to the date of the recordings, the jury is still out, but I would guess 1966.

MVD visual are doing a great job of unearthing 60’s long forgotten videos and letting the world experience these great artists. Just because it is new and shiny, does not make it better.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight is a song that almost everyone has heard, but what might surprise you is that it was first performed in 1937! In this version The Tokens take it for a test drive, and do a fine job.

Iko Iko by the Dixie Cups is a staple for the Mardi Gras crowd in New Orleans, and do not let us down in this video version.

All of these videos were made back in that magic period when everyone in the band dressed alike. Maybe the finest examples were ‘The Platters’, resplendent in red jackets, white pants, and perfectly in sync with every dance move they make on stage, they are better than something you could produce today with this ‘Computer Generated Images (CGI). Their rendition of Only You is a real WOW.

There are lots of other artists featured, but I will leave that up to you to find.

I must confess that I was not entirely happy with this DVD. My major beef with it was its length, at 53 minutes; it was over way too soon! The other problem was the video quality, this one was not quite up to the quality that MVD usually eek out of ‘vintage’ footage (Damn that makes me feel old!).
