Slumdog Millionaire

I didn’t see this movie until it came out on DVD.  I know!  That’s a little irresponsible of me, to be sure.  But all the “great” movies out last year that seemed sure to be award winners just didn’t seem appealing to me anymore.  I saw most of the ones from the year previous, but that’s because I like darker movies, whereas nothing seemed like it would move me from this new batch of films.  Well, I was wrong and one great movie is out on DVD and it’s ready right now!

Starting this March 31st, now available on DVD from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment comes the latest film from the fantastic director Danny Boyle.  Slumdog Millionaire is ready to run right out of your television and bring a tale of love and sheer chance and destiny into your living room with all the pulsing rhythms of Bollywood.  Bring home this Academy Award Best Picture film today!

Jamal Malik is an 18 year old Muslim orphan living in Mumbai.  He works in a call center but is now just one phone answer away from winning 20 million rupees on India’s version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.  How could he know all those answers?  With a little police brutality, they hear the stories behind each answer and how he knows those specific details.  Orphaned at a young age with his brother and a new friend Latika, they do their best to stay alive and find a good life.  But why is Jamal on the television show in the first place?  The answer and following conclusion lead to one of the most compelling and heartwarming movies to come out recently.  This movie stars Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Madhur Mittal, Irrfan Khan, Anil Kapoor and features music by award-winning Indian composer A. R. Rahman.

The special features included in this DVD release are 12 deleted scenes which were not part of the theatrical release, a look at Danny Boyle and the making of this film, a featurette about editing the film, an optional audio commentary from Danny Boyle and Dev Patel and another optional audio commentary from Christian Colson and Simon Beaufoy.

This film is yet another exhilarating tour de force from Danny Boyle.  It is a heart wrenching story and the ending brings everything together so nicely.  It’s the ending that ties it all up and takes what could be a slightly decent movie and turns it into a fantastic and moving tale you won’t soon forget.  Dev Patel was incredible as Jamal, but I couldn’t take my eyes off of Freida Pinto as Latika.  Danny Boyle is a modern film genius and this movie clearly deserved to win Best Picture this year.  I’m not quite sure how it would have fared last year, against Cormac McCarthy and the oilman and Khalid Hosseini, but it deserves to stand within that pantheon without a doubt.  Give this movie a spin and you will not regret it at all.

This movie will make you feel like a Millionaire.
