Short stories are the most perfect expression of an idea.  Novels have subplots and underdeveloped characters, movies get caught up in visual aspects, and sayings are trite and lack context.  But a short story, that’s where everything comes together in just the right proportions.  In a way, short films are like that too.  That’s why there is an Oscar given out for short films.

And what company is better known for their short films than Pixar?  After all, they show one before each one of their movies and often include an extra one on the DVDs they release.  Therefore, it’s no surprise to see the new film released on DVD by Pixar is Pixar Short Films Collection: Volume 1.

This collection includes 13 films together for the first time ever.  These films, most of which are already familiar to families or those who have seen the Pixar films before, include The Adventures of Andre & Wally B, Luxo Jr., Red’s Dream, Tin Toy, Knick Knack, Geri’s Game, For The Birds, Mike’s New Car, Boundin’, Jack-Jack Attack, One Man Band, Mater and the Ghostlight, and Lifted.  It also includes a short documentary about Pixar and their short films, audio commentaries on the short films, and much, much more.

These short films are amazing.  They show incredible talent, both in storytelling and sheer technical ability.  Pixar has always been the home of cutting edge computer animation and this new collection of their short films shows just how far back into the past that dominance reaches.
