This documentary has been kicking around for several years, I am glad that IFC and Sundance have decided to give it another push. In part the Press Release reads:

Directed and produced by Christopher Quinn (Sundance award winner God Grew Tired of Us), Eating Animals tells the story of the beginning of the end of factory farming. Produced with Academy Award winner Natalie Portman and Jonathan Safran Foer, the film is the feature-length adaptation of Foer’s critically acclaimed book of the same name that starts out with a simple question – where do our eggs, dairy and meat come from? Through the intimate narratives of several farmers dedicated to bringing their trade – and the way we eat – back to its roots, the film explores the notion of stepping away from the practices of the past 40 years that have polluted our environment, endangered our health, and caused us all to be complicit in the inhumane treatment of animals. Looking at the costs we’ve incurred as our country has become dominated by massive industrial complexes designed to feed the masses, Eating Animals paints a picture of a future where traditional farming is no longer a distant memory, but is instead the only way forward.

In some ways I wish they had titled it “You can farm this way, or you can farm that way”. Much of the movie was filmed in North Carolina that seems to be home to many CAFO (Factory Farming) operations.

Pork Sausage Farm Lane houses one of the smaller ones.

As is said in the film, “whats with all the Pepto-Bismol ponds”?

These are hog rearing facilities and the ponds are the waste that is produced. Of course the ponds fill up, but its OK, the CAFO operators have a cunning plan, spray it on the land as Pepto fertilizer. This of course leeches into the streams and rivers and so starts another deadly sequence of destruction.

I asked a good friend of mine, Author and Attorney Mannie Barling to give me his thoughts on Eating Animals:

““Eating Animals” is as timely now as when it was first shown.  Humans were not designed to eat genetically modified animals, especially animals feed with generically modified corn.  As time goes on the link between genetically modified animals and GMO corn will be undeniable, no matter how much money Monsanto spends to convince us otherwise.  The final proof will come with the increase in various forms of cancer and the decline in the average age of humans in the next three decades.  Just look at the increase in cancer statistics since the inception of GMO feed and chickens that serves as a harbinger of things to come.”

One of the more worrying aspects is the amount of influence that Big Food and to certain degree Big Pharma has had on government regulations, it makes Russian meddling in elections completely inconsequential. As I recall it is a felony to record or photograph inside a CAFO (Confined Animal Feed Operation) without expressed permission, needless to say that is about as likely as Trump sharing his Tax Returns.

Eating Animals is a disturbing documentary, Turkeys modified to be so fat they can no longer reproduce by natural means. Chickens in tiny cages, eat drink and off to the slaughter.

Do not get me wrong, I am not some PETA whack job, I love meat, I eat it every day, I just wish that there was a more sustainable solution.

Please watch Eating Animals if you have the chance
