There’s something about killers we are drawn to, serial killers in particular.  For whatever reason; our bourgeois thirst for the macabre, our innate voyeurism, or the search to understand the darkness inside ourselves; we take special note of them.  Bundy, Gacy, Gein, Dahmer, and the Zodiac killer, to only name a few.  These are only a few names which we inscribe on the blood-soaked walls of our alleys with our reverence and remembrance.  And now there’s one more movie out on a brand new format about one from this cadre of the morbid.

Starting this January 27th, now available on Blu-ray Disc from Paramount Studios Home Entertainment comes the story of one of the greatest and most daring serial killers who was never successfully caught.  Zodiac – Blu-ray Disc is ready to leap out of your television screen and transport you into the horror of the Seventies in a whole new way.  Bring home this groundbreaking and human look at real terror today!

Zodiac is the story of the famed Zodiac serial killer and his reign of terror over San Francisco.  This tale looks behind the scenes at the cops and newspaper writers who helped to define this crisis, deal with the murders, and go on to investigate the murders after the case fell apart.  Superior acting by Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., and Mark Ruffalo sells this movie and makes it seem more like the original event than a re-creation.

The special features included in the Blu-ray presentation of this film are an optional audio commentary from director David Fincher, another optional audio commentary from Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Brad Fischer, James Vanderbilt and James Ellroy, a documentary on the making of this film, a deeper look at the visual effects of the film, storyboard sequences for the three murder scenes and comparisons with the finished effects, a featurette into who police believe is the main suspect of the case and a feature-length documentary about every possible aspect of the actual investigation into this case.

I enjoy this film more and more every single time I watch it.  The debauched Robert Downey Jr. is a magnificent treat, especially the scene where he and Jake Gyllenhaal go drinking in the bar.  Speaking of Jake, he is nothing short of masterful in this role.  He is such a dedicated nerd and I would put the sincerity of this role above nearly every performance he has turned in since Donnie Darko.  The story itself is a wonderful one and made only the more so because it is actually true.  This film remains a delight and it’s even more so on Blu-ray.  Bring home this great film today.

Zodiac is a smart thriller, a fun film made spectacular through great writing, the truth of life, and stellar acting.  Zodiac should not be missed.
