The Best Of Dr. Katz

I saw maybe a couple of sketches from this show when I was a young child.  It wasn’t until my senior year of college that I started paying attention to this show on the internet, right after my meth addict roommate started talking about it all the time.  My favorite sketch of all time would be the one with Jim Gaffigan where he’s talking about a manatee being on Ricki Lake’s show.  “Whatever, sea pig!”  That’s comic gold and I was greatly saddened to discover that it was not on this DVD.  However, there are a whole bunch of great comics on this DVD for you to check out now.

Starting this December 2nd, now available on DVD from HBO Video, Comedy Central DVD and Paramount Studios Home Entertainment comes the definitive collection of the worst therapist and the best patients ever.  The Best Of Dr. Katz Professional Therapist is ready to stretch out on your living room couch and bring you some of the best stand-up material ever delivered by cartoon characters.  Bring home this hilarious collection we’ve all had to wait way too long for.

The whole premise of this show was that this cartoon doctor who wasn’t a very good therapist would have in famous comics and talk to them about their problems.  That would quickly parlay into their stand up routines and it was hilarious.  The comics included in this best of collection are Dave Attell, Dave Chappelle, Janeane Garofalo, Denis Leary, Conan O’Brien, Ray Romano, Sarah Silverman, Margaret Cho, Louis C.K., David Cross, David Duchovny, Susie Essman, Kathy Griffin, Richard Lewis, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kevin Nealon, Patton Oswald and Brian Regan.  The receptionist is played by Laura Silverman and Dr. Katz’s son is played by H. Jon Benjamin.

The only special feature included in this DVD was where Dr. Katz takes a look back at his favorite moments between Laura and Ben.  We are supposed to be excited about the bad jokes that took place between the real comedy?  Where are the true special features?  Look at all the influential and hilarious comics who were on this show towards the beginning of their careers.  How can Paramount get none of them to step up and talk about what it was like being on this show?  That would create some special features that would actually be worth looking forward to.

Most of the comics on this show are so hilarious!  This really is the best of, although I’m still missing some Jim Gaffigan.  It’s also a treat to hear Laura Silverman, because I think she’s the best of the Silverman sisters and I’m not quite sure why I do.  The animation in this show bugs me, but the hilarity of the guests keeps me coming back for more.  This is a wonderful trip back into one of the funniest shows on television back then.

This Dr. will make you feel good.
