NASA has opened the door to the next generation of space discovery by announcing ambitious plans for a permanently staffed base on the surface of the Moon. Construction on the lunar outpost would begin soon after 2020, with astronauts living there within four years, the space agency said.
The project comes after several prominent scientists and environmentalists urged humans to look beyond Earth to ensure the survival of the species.
Ultimately, the Moon would be a staging post for humans to explore the solar system and one day land on Mars. “This is not your father’s Apollo,” said John Logsdon, director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, referring to America’s short-stay trips to the Moon of the 1960s and 1970s
The first manned mission to Earth’s satellite in two generations will blast off by 2020 to start work on an outpost that eventually will be occupied permanently, the US space agency said.
At first, crews of four will make week-long runs to the Moon, before larger missions make progressively longer trips to build up living modules and power plants. The goal is to establish a full-time human presence by 2024, with astronauts spending six-month tours at the lunar base.

no i dont think so
The moon is unstable with dust storms and volcanic eruption every half hour. It’s just not right
i am just not too sure by 2024 that humans will begin to create a mass effect project to begin venturing the fonrtiers of space. it is said that races that become too adavnced and powerfull will essentialy just dissapear over night. it is un-explained the dissapearance of many advance and great races, for example. it was by chance that the presence of the egyptains still remained over a presence of 4000 years from when we first explored some area’s of egypt some time in the 1920’s. what will happen to the human race if we manage to colonize certain planets, i mean come on, we have been working on this since like? the 1950’s, they said we would have space cities and the moon and mars by now, such technology can not even be gripped even now :/ mars has no initial atmosphere so we would have to harbour the technology to replicate a faulse but yet affective atmosphere for the constant showers of astroids that will hit mars, this is one of the many reasons why mars is just still to this very day un-inhabital :/ we should of been more prepared for sucha tenacious jump in technology that could range from 50-100 years :/ i am a great believer and i am all for human presence in space though, they have not prepared for the radiation exposure, the un-known illnesses that could be threatening to the human race. we have not yet even found a cure for cancer so this would just be based around luck, we need to start trying to find resources elsewhere to maintain the human population :/ but the jump in technology they shall attempt will just be ludicrous and illogical :/ before we live in a fantasy world, we have to face facts that we are a foolish and ambitious race and we are destroying the planet that was just so perfect for our existance :/ i am not sure if we are even yet worthy of the opportunity to branch out into space :/ i do await 2024, i await 2030 perhaps 2040 when we may have sufficient technology then, but now or in a decade, i really just do not know.
