On Sunday, police were called to a Phoenix home by a relative who said that the people inside were trying to perform an exorcism on a young girl. When police arrived on the scene, they heard screams coming from a bedroom and forced their way in. A bed was pushed up against the door. Officers managed to push it open a few inches to find 49-year-old Ronald Marquez choking his three year old granddaughter while the girl’s mother, a 19-year-old woman was in the room, naked and chanting something religious. The little girl was crying and gasping for breath.

Officers forced the door open enough for one of them to enter. A struggle ensued, and a stun gun was used on Marquez. There seemed to be no effect so another officer entered the room and stunned him again. The little girl was freed from his grasp and passed through the door to the relative who had called the police. Marquez was detained with handcuffs after a struggle with officers and was said to appear normal but suddenly stopped breathing. Police and the Fire Department tried to revive him but failed, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The purpose of the exorcism was said to have been to release the demons from the child. She and her mother were hospitalized for treatment. The girl had bruises and other unspecified injuries, and her mother had a cut lip and facial lacerations. The two lived in the house with Marquez. The girl’s mother was not arrested, but the police are considering pressing criminal charges.
