Varsha Mahender Sabhnani, 45, and her husband, Mahender Murlidhar Sabhnani, 51, of Long Island, New York, may be paying $15,000.00 a day, plus bail of 3.5 million dollars to turn their mansion in a prison.

The couple is accused of keeping two Indonesian female housekeepers as prisoners within the mansion for several years.  They are also accused of torture of the two women, including beating with a broom handle, cutting behind the ears, burns, and forced to eat vast amounts of chili peppers at a time, besides being paid only $100.00 dollars a month, which was sent to a relative back home.  The two women showed officials scars and bruises from the attacks.  They were also made to hide in a 3’ x 3’ storage room whenever visitors were present.

If convicted, each could face a 17 to 22 year sentence for their crime.  Currently they are being held without bail until a hearing sometime today.
Mahender Murlidhar Sabhnani, a head of a perfume distributing business, is not accused of conducting the torture, only his wife, but officials state that he had gained from this crime.

Both housekeepers were in the United States with expired permits.
Even though at present it’s only the word of two Indonesian women against the husband and wife team, the expired permits of the two women and the fact that the Sabhananis are in jail does speak volumes.

One would think that with so much money that they could afford to pay a decent wage, and provide a safe environment, not to mention legal, employment.  How did the Sabhnanis justify their behavior?  How could two well to do individuals even conceive of justifying this type of criminal behavior?

22 years locked up in a criminal prison, forfeiture of all their assets, may cause these two self centered idiots to fully realize what they have done.  Think of that “Reality Show”!  (Not being a big fan of reality shows, or millionaires, I would watch this one!),0,1513272.story
