Everyone wants to be happy and be free from stress. There is a lot of media coverage with fancy terms like Happiness Index and Gross national Happiness etc. But simply put happiness means a fulfilling peaceful life. It is antonym to stress which has turned out to be the biggest killer of our times. A lot has been written and said about it.

I recently came to know more about it as I witnessed my highs and lows in life.I understood that sweet and bitter phases are part of life. In fact such changes makes the life worth living and avoid being monotonous. But, you need some support when you feel down and your spirits are low. This support may be external or internal. Good thing is that there are many options and numerous simple ways to be happy. All you have to do is some introspection to keep your mind at peace.Mildred Barthel rightly said that Happiness is a conscious choice, not an automatic response. You need to make conscious efforts to rid of negative thought and  keep yourself free from them.

For a permanent sense of happiness we need to make conscious efforts to help others. Important thing is that we should help without expecting any payback. As we helps others from heart we transcend our suffering. No wonder that almost every religion in the world preaches to help the needy.

A chinese proverb goes – If you want happiness for an hour — take a nap.If you want happiness for a day — go fishing. If you want happiness for a month — get married. If you want happiness for a year — inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime — help someone else.

Another key requirement is controlling your desires. Desires are infinite and you cannot have them all fulfilled in your lifetime. John Stuart Mill mentioned “I have learned to seek my happiness by limiting my desires, rather than in attempting to satisfy them”.Similarly, Fredrick Koeing observed that we tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.Remember journey of thousand miles begins with the first step.

If you want to be happy, take the first step : Promise yourself whenever you feel down or depressed you will make all the conscious efforts to come out of it.It may include reading a good book, talking to some-one who could uplift you.

I for example go to a site and spend few minutes reading it. It only takes 5-10 minutes but is de-stressing.A book (Live your Life ) written by the owner of this blog revolves around the general life management with an objective of feeling fulfilled and happy.

Losses and bad times are part and parcel of life. But many a times they introduce us to new opportunities and force us to stretch our capabilities. Helen Keller said, “When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us”

Lastly, I wanted to share some of my learnings through this blog with the objective of making others feel happy. If you felt good as you read through this blog, objective stands accomplished. And I thank God for choosing me the medium to make someone happy. Thank you! Shaveta Bansal
