Monica Lewinsky’s name popped into the news again recently. It seems she has graduated from the London School of Economics with a Master of Science degree. The usual wise-guy bloggers and columnists are having their moment, speculating as to how Monica really got that degree and the high grade average that went with it. But really folks, isn’t it time to give Monica a pass – or at least focus on the real perp in this instance?

Last weekend, vigils were held in over 50 cities marking the five year anniversary of the Catholic sex scandal, in which the stories of nearly 900 victims of pedophile priests were recounted. It’s not difficult to understand how Catholic altar boys and other youngsters came to submit to these mortifications. A priest is a sort of mysterious idol, able to forgive sins, marry people, perform exorcisms, change bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ, and so on. So the altar boys, in total awe of these capabilities, and trusting this hallowed icon, became easy prey.

Now we turn to a president of the United States (POTUS). POTUS is acknowledged to be the most powerful leader in the world, head of the mightiest military force ever, and, in the case of Bill Clinton, a charismatic and eye-catching male. Monica Lewinsky didn’t have a chance.

There are those who would have you believe that Lewinsky seduced a married man, tried to disconnect him from his wife, and used her feminine wiles to lure him into an unholy assignation. Really? Does the bulk of this misdeed lie with a 21-year old intern, or is POTUS the prime perpetrator of the crime – if it can be called that?

Just as the relationship between doctor and patient, lawyer and client, priest and youngster presuppose authority and control by the former over the latter, so too was the relationship analogous between POTUS and Lewinsky. But it is Lewinsky, now 32, who bears a lifetime stigma, while POTUS is still the darling of the aging females who are attracted to the combination of Clinton’s former high status and his current slimmed down exterior.

Monica Lewinsky is primarily guilty of acute poor judgment. Clinton, on the other hand, put his office at risk, was convicted of perjury to a grand jury, and became only the second president in history to be impeached. Some of Clinton’s critics say he even contributed to the decline of sexual mores in America by his statement before the world that “I did not have sex with that woman,” while acknowledging that Lewinsky did perform oral sex on him. Eleven years later, surveys of U.S. students in middle school and high school show that one-third of the students have adopted Clinton’s classification of what is and what is not “sex.”

The media’s (and bloggers’) approach to the Lewinsky affair will most likely continue to hold her up to ridicule and disrespect. She has fled the country and is said to be looking for employment in Britain. POTUS, meanwhile, is planning on occupying the White House once again as FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States).
