ICCAN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) are the organization that control what is known as TLD’s Top Level Domains, in non geek speak they are the folks that tell us what we can put at the end of web addresses, .com, .org, etc.

This week in Paris they have decided to relax the rules, while they are not opening it up completely they will now consider new TLD’s. And you can bet your bottom dollar that the first applications are going to be for .sex.

The real reason for relaxing the rules would seem to be aimed at large organizations that currently run many domains. You could have a .linux , or a .IBM you get the idea I am sure.

Inevitably it will be the porn business that wants to get into this piece of the pie. Followed closely by the rather murky world of web site name speculators. Who wouldn’t want to own .microsoft? Now that would be worth a buck or two.

It will be interesting to see where this all leads to. The Internet has long been the technological equivalent of the Wild West, and this latest proposed move will certainly cause a few gunfights at the OK coral.

It is not clear how these new TLD’s will be administrated, The main problem I see is one of ownership. If for example Microsoft want .microsoft, they likely want to control it, they would not want people to register spam sites as a .microsoft, on the other hand lets say there is a .humor domain, surely anyone that wants to set up a humor site should be allowed to.

Oh, good times ahead!
