Australian victims of asbestos related illness have welcomed the verdict that was recently handed down with regards to executives of James Hardie. The New South Wales Supreme Court recently found James Hardie executives guilty of being engaged in misleading conduct over its asbestos compensation trust.

The decision has been particularly welcomed by the Asbestos Victims Association of South Australia. James Hardie was found to have breached the Corporations Act after making false statements to the stock exchange, according to reports.

Terry Miller from the Victim’s Association said: “There’s been anger all the way through, because everybody, everybody who’s been affected by an asbestos-related disease, everybody believes that Hardies and their executives knew for many, many years but continued to carry on and go for the corporate dollar rather than worry about the person’s health.”

He also said that there was still a long way to go, adding: “South Australia has the highest rate of mesothelioma per capita. Our association has little over 400 members that have some form of asbestos-related disease at the moment.”
