Shrek seen as poor role model

The Department of Health and Human Services has chosen the cartoon character Shrek to be its spokesman for an anti-obesity campaign aimed at children. In the ads, Shrek will urge children to go outside and play, get some excerise, get away from the tv and video games, for at least an hour a day

There was a time in this country when kids would do exactly that, and not just for an hour, but hours on end, and there just weren’t many fat kids around. Today, almost every other child you see, if you see them outside at all, is overweight, or borderline obese.

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, however, thinks Shrek is the wrong way to go, and wants the ads for healthy exercise to be scrapped. Why? Because MCDonalds is going to put Shrek on a Happy Meal, and that just doesn’t sit well with these folks.
