Ah, the nanny state.

Keeping people from making bad decisions, keeping them safe and sound.

No transfats in that hamburger, punch in a code word or your car won’t start, wear your seatbelt when driving and your helmet when you’re on your Harley.

Well, as a doc I’ve agreed with most of these things.

But one wonders how far things have gone when Gmail adds a feature that is the equivalent of a car’s “drunkometer” so that you won’t accidentally email the wrong thing at the wrong time.

From the Google Blog:

When you enable Mail Goggles, it will check that you’re really sure you want to send that late night Friday email. And what better way to check than by making you solve a few simple math problems after you click send to verify you’re in the right state of mind?

Hmmm…math program

A lot of us would have trouble figuring out those math problems even when sober…

But never mind.

The program only works at night on weekends, so if you really want to send that angry letter to your boss, you will either have to wait till Monday morning when you’re sober enough to find you calculator, or skip it completely.

And repeat after me: Google is your friend…google is your friend.
