A former shipyard workers has received compensation from a manufacturer of asbestos related parts, after claiming that the products made by the firm resulted in him contracting the deadly asbestos related cancer, mesothelioma.

Following the recent verdict fifty nine year old John Koonce was awarded nearly four and a half million dollars. He was a former worker at the Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corp. The compensation included four million dollars in compensation and nearly half a million for medical expenses, which came from Illinois based John Crane Inc.

Between 1967 and 1971 Mr Koonce worked with gaskets made by John Crane Inc., as well as with asbestos packing and other asbestos products made by the manufacturer. He was diagnosed with the deadly form of cancer in 2006.

After the verdict Mr Koonce stated: “I’m pleased with the verdict. It just shows the justice system does work. I thank the jury — three long weeks, long hours each day and that’s a lot of responsibility. I’m happy with the verdict. I’d give it all back for my lung though, that’s for sure.”
