A former United States postal worker has been awarded two millions dollars in compensation following exposure to asbestos during his career, which subsequently resulted in him developing the deadly asbestos related cancer mesothelioma, a disease for which there is currently no cure.
Sixty nine year old William Willis worked for the postal service between 1966 and 1992. He is also said to have been exposed to asbestos whilst working as a handyman. His complaint claims that the manufacturers of the asbestos products that were used in piping and other applications did not provide property warning about the dangers of exposure.
The defendants in the case have claimed that there was not enough asbestos in the products to warrant a warning. However, the jury at Sangamon County found the defendant guilty, and ruled in favour of the plaintiff, awarding him one and a half million dollars and awarding his wife half a million dollars.
A lawyer working on behalf of Mr Willis and his wife stated: “I think the jury heard a very complex case and returned a verdict that was supported by the evidence and brought justice to Mr. and Mrs. Willis.â€
