Who can resist an Asian (Hong Kong) movie with a title like that? The press release went on to say that the DVD contained a ‘dubbed’ English version. That was enough for me, I just had to have it.

Billed as a ‘horror’ movie I was expecting 100 foot long badly animated Anacondas doing battle with Godzilla. I was wrong, Killer Snakes is a very interesting, well made, and well thought out movie. While low on the probability scale, it is very high on the watchable scale.

Snakes are often abused in the Far East, their gall bladders are considered to be an aphrodisiac, and they command high prices in low places. Our hero, (name unpronounceable) is a young man that has been abused as a child, and abused and beaten as an adult. This is the original anti hero, no muscles, no fortune, no hope. Women shun him, men walk all over him, in short he is a pathetic creature.

He does have one redeeming feature though, he cares about animals, and when he discovers a snake that has been cruelly mutilated for the prized gall bladder he takes it into his care. The practice of mutilation is so prevalent that soon he becomes the savior of our slithering friends, and they respond by becoming his private army. Sexually and physically frustrated, his new friends are used to reek retribution against those that he dislikes.

This is a most unusual movie, it is awash in blood, gore, and believe it or not, Chinese boobies! I have never seen a movie that has had so many of them in it.

The DVD comes with an ‘unrated’ rating, but I would not suggest that it would be family viewing. Having a family night at the movies, and airing this on your home theater system will likely cause friction!

But if you are looking for something a little different, this might be the ideal rental from your local video store. Oscar material it is not, entertaining it is. My research leads me to believe that the original version debuted in 1975, but don’t be put off by that, it is well worth the effort.

I recommend that you sample it first and then get your own copy of Killer Snakes here

Fun little movie, and definitely one step up from Godzilla.
