“A senior State Department official has apologized for saying that the United States acted with “arrogance” and “stupidity”

Talk about closing the barn door after the horse has galloped away. And talk about needing a refresher course in… umm, diplomacy? Not to mention a friendly reminder about furthering the interests of the United States as a whole amongst citizens of other nations; which was, unless I have been severely misinformed. the primary mission of the State Department. Mr. Fernandez is a senior member of the State Department, for the moment at least, although I am sure more knowledgeable people than I are scratching their heads and saying “this doofus is a senior diplomat? Upon what grounds was that determination made, pray tell?”
Possibly the required skill set includes the ability to speak coherently in at least one language, with your foot in your mouth all the way to the knee. Never mind about avoiding shooting from the lip, and giving the host nation press another reason to go into lathers of gleeful outrage; leave that sort of stuff to members of Congress, they’ve years more experience in making foreign-country pratfalls. Career diplomats are supposed to be able to avoid them. It’s enough to make one wonder three things: who does Mr. Fernandez think he works for really, does he have a tell-all book in the works… and if we might be better off seconding Borat to the State Department, in his place.
