The comedian Denis Leary and star of ‘Rescue Me,’ has apologised to parents with autism. Leary came under fire from all sections of society for his provocative statments on autism. Leary suggested in his book, “Why We Suck†a “Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid†that inattentive mothers and competitive dads were throwing money at shrinks “to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons.†His comments created a stir all over the world. Here at Blogger News Network we reminded Denis Leary that autism is ‘no joke.’
Leary has now come out with a statement apologising for his uncaring remarks on autism. He said “I have nothing but admiration and sympathy for the people I know who are raising children with autism. In fact, they were the inspiration for the chapter I wrote about the subject. To them – and to all parents of children with autism – I apologize for any pain the out-of-context quotes from my book may have caused.â€
The Boston Herald newspaper quoted Denis Leary as saying, ‘“It was never my intention to exploit the serious subject of autism. . . . . What I wrote was not directed towards children who have autism.
“I do not say in the book – and I have never said – that autism does not exist. In fact, the chapter dealing with autism in my book discusses the struggle of close friends of mine to raise a child with autism.â€

Ok – here’s my 2 cents– first let met state that i work in the health related field so I see things quite differently than most but this HAS to be put SOMEWHERE…I am NOT saying that Autism doesnt exists. HOWEVER—it has become the ‘diagnosis du jour’ meaning that there are too many people saying ‘ well, there is nothing we can do for Johnny & Janie, so this ( being the dx of autism) MUST be the answer. One mom holes up w/ her child and watches TV until the husband get home…and then wonders why the child is into EVERYTHING–Another mom is so centered on her older child’s high school, that the little boy gets passed up for for outings w/ the parents ( sorry, we have to Charlies football/basketball/baseball/awards ceremony) and again wonders why the child acts out…Susie is not paying attention is pre-school; that MUST be the reason..
I am NOT saying that autism isnt a real condition, but like ‘conditions’, if all avenues are exhausted BEFORE jumping the gun, we wouldnt have so many ‘autistic’ children ( meaning the ones that just wont behave but fall into something like the category mentioned above).. but what do I know? I am just a mom
