When it comes to classic crime writers there are few that can rival the iconic Agatha Christie. She has authored more books than I can count, and given birth to many great characters. One of the best known is Miss Marple, a seemingly demur spinster who is also an amateur sleuth.

Miss Marple has been reinvented countless times for stage and TV, but without doubt the most memorable is the British TV series staring Geraldine McEwen. Geraldine has a rich resume of film and stage roles, one of the most memorable being her lead role in the 1978 movie The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie. In 2004, well into her 70’s she was persuaded to take on the Miss Marple role for Britain’s ITV. In total three seasons of shows were made.

Acorn Media has just released the final season Agatha Christie’s Marple – Series 3 on DVD for the first time.

There is a timelessness about Agatha Christie’s novels and one could set them against almost any backdrop, ITV has chosen probably the most apt, a post world war II period. The cinematic quality of this production is outstanding, far better than one would normally expect from a TV series. They have also managed to include a host of great talent to accompany Geraldine McEwan on this quest for truth and justice. This 4 DVD box set has appearances by David Jacobi, Joanna Lumley, and Anthony Andrews.

With a total running time of almost 6 hours, this is some great entertainment. One of the great joys with this kind of production is that you can watch it several times and still get more out of it. Agatha Christie is a writer who does leave clues along the way, your mission is to spot them. ITV has done an exceptional job of incorporating this aspect.
