Who can resist listening to a CD by a band with such a ‘catchy’ name? As to the genre of the music, it is exactly what you would expect.

Sometimes I feel more like a ‘cold case’ investigator than a reviewer, and that was certainly the case with this CD. As far as I can tell the Magic Mushroom Band was active between 1982 and 1995. I think the band members were Gary Masters (aka Gary Moonboot, guitar), Kim Russell (Kim Oz, vocals) and Gary Twining Lead Guitar), Wayne Buaku (bass) and Jim Lacey (drums) rounded out this interesting group. The genre is officially billed as ‘Psychedelic Space Pop’, which is a new one on me!

While they do not have that electronic spacey sound of the Dave Brock Hawkwind tradition, they do not do a bad job at all. The CD is part original material and part covers. Of the covers the absolute best is Pink Floyds early opus, ‘Set the controls for the heart of the Sun’, which they just ‘nail’!

I find a lot of todays music to be boring (top 10), obnoxious (rap), or mind numbing (remixes), so I think this kind of album is just the ticket.

My message to the Magic Mushroom Band, is simple, put down the hallucinogens for a while and get back into the studio. It is time for a shake up in the music world, and you guys could do it.

You can get your copy of Singles and Rarities from MVD, and I urge you to do so.
