It is easy to ‘cherry pick’ parts of any trial. Todays activities in the jury selection phase in the Casey Anthony trial is a great example. I won’t bother you with the details, you can find them here. Suffice it to say, Judge Perry is not going to take any ‘crap’. Mess with this judge, start reaching in your bank account!
The story of perspective juror Jonathan Greene has been splashed across the news. Mr. Greene has his 15 minutes of fame, but then it is over. Turning up in court in a T-shirt should have been a clue….
What I found much more interesting was a short exchange by lead defense Jose Baez and Judge Perry over the ‘ethnic make-up’ of the jury pool.
In order to find the ‘ethnic mix’ Judge Perry offered to poll a local homeless shelter that had a high ethnic mix.
OK, I have to admit that I was laughing too hard to recall Jose Baez’s exact words, but he said YES.
He might have found some friendly jurors. I spent six years working with homeless people. Some merely need a ‘leg up’, others are looking for a ‘hand out’. Two months in a hotel, good food, and trips, who could turn it down? Even better you get paid $30 a day (paid weekly). If the Judge has a problem, I have 1000 potential new jurors for him. Of course there may be a bit of a clothing issue, but it shouldn’t cost a lot, maybe Jose Baez, Cheney Mason and Jeff Ashton have some Suits, Shrts and Ties they no longer use?

I am very surprised that very few are talking about what I thought was the biggest revelation of todays courtroom activity……. Judge Belvin Perry threatening , promising , suggesting , that the next batch of potential jurors might be brought in from the Homeless Shelter next door !!!!
How do people get picked for jury duty?
STATE LAWS REQUIRE jurors to be selected RANDOMLY from a FAIR CROSS-SECTION of the county in which they serve.
I think that this comment by the Judge was made in response to Jose Baez’ protests that the jury pool has not been a reflection of the counties multi-ethnic make-up .
I am sure that Mr Baez is spending his evening doing a feasability study to see how a trial would go with a few Homeless citizens on the jury. He may even spend a little more of Floridas’ money on a mock trial .
I wonder how long it took for the shelter to fill up with eligible jurors . Let’ face it …. Most won’t have elderly or child care issues , don’t have employment that can’t do without them , or a trip to London planned for the 2nd week of June. The $30 per diem , plus Food and Air-Conditioned Lodging , And the almost guaranteed book deal , might be enough to for them .
We have seen Casey’s emotional breakdowns when the charges are read , Imagine her tears when someone that may have been sleeping on the beach last January says that they could send her to her death if convicted !
Judge Perry will be unable to dismiss any of this batch for cause , since he has Unfair knowledge of them , I see reversable error written all over this one !
A judge cannot special request a jury pool ! Whether Baez likes the idea or not , it becomes a chess game . Will Jose use his Strikes tomorrow ? Will the Prosecution raise the “Jury of her peers” issue? Will the day be spent at sidebar? Does Belvin Perry have something on HIS calendar for late July ? How long can a homeless person deliberate in a Holiday Inn ?
It was So Easy to pick a Jury back in the Salem Witch Trial days !!!!!
Going just about as expected. Have to admit, I thought it would be hard to get the death penalty actually done in this case, but just seating the panel seems to be beyond the Florida legal system. They haven’t even come close to jurors tweeting or blgogging from the box yet. Poor kid, how many even remember why the mom is on trial? That was a rhetorical questions, by the way. I know there are plenty of your readers and listeners who remember why.
i thank she is so cazy for doing that to her own kid what is worng with
what is she thanking when she did that to her little girl. she needs help and she need’s to die for what she did to her own kid.
thank you
Looking back on the jury selection process, I remember Judge Perry stating this about going to the homeless shelter. I think Judge Perry is the best!! LOL
Orlando is my hometown, and I’m both surprised and impressed that he found a jury in Pinellas County as fast as he did. Fantastic job JP!
Let’s hope that Caylee gets the due justice she deserves in the verdict of this trial. RIP and God Bless sweet Caylee…….
she probably (in drugs) paid someone to commit this crime , she hasn’t got the guts to do it ,
she probably asked someone to get rid of her baby for a while so she could party ,I have noticed the blank’look’ when certain subjects are brought up during the trial concerning the remains of beautiful Caylee like … (whats this?)
yes, I believe she took some of Caylee’s belongings from the house.
first of all we will never know the manner of death , so lets concentrate on the whereabouts of the person on Trial who was gone for 31 days , yes, the Trial is somewhat a circus ,also, didn’t she tell her parents? “shes not far from home. does’nt that tell you she knew where she was , IMO she may get manslaughter
