Alfonso Rodriguez Jr, of Crookston, Minnesota showed no remorse, or any other emotion Friday, when a jury in North Dakota handed him the death sentence. It was the first sentence of its kind in nearly a century. The 53 year-old convicted sex offender kidnapped a 22 year old student of the University of North Dakota as she was leaving a shopping mall in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
North Dakota no longer practices the death penalty; however, the case was tried under federal law because Rodriguez Jr. transported his victim, Dru Sjodin, across state lines. Her slain body was discovered in Minnesota. North Dakota’s last execution was in 1905.
