By Our Western Region Chief Correspondent, Wise man

In what could be described as a political earthquake , President Jammeh last evening fired the paramount chief of Western Region, Dembo Santa Bojang, the Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report. Bojang who doubles as head chief of Brikama for many uninterrupted years, is believed to be the Gambia’s longest serving traditional chief. He has been relieved of duties with immediate effect.

Chief Bojang is being replaced as paramount chief for Western Region by Seefo Demba Sanyang, the current chief of Lamin Village, according to reliable sources.

President Jammeh recently created the portfolio of paramount chief, which is superior to local chiefs. Mr. Bojang has lost such portfolio accorded him by the Gambian leader.

The sacking of chief Dembo Santa Bojang has sent shock waves through many in Brikama and its environs . “His removal has shocked the whole of Brikama; as you may know chief Santa is the most senior among all the Chiefs in the Gambia,” an apparently distraught native of Brikama told this paper.

Reliable sources further informed Freedom News paper that the Kombo Central head chief was removed from office due to his alleged involvement in luring APRC militants to vote against the APRC sponsored candidates in the last parliamentary election . “ In that election most voters in Brikama voted against APRC party even thought the ruling APRC won the total vote cast in Kombo central constituency,” said our source.

Some elders and youths in and around the town of Brikama who spoke to this reporter expressed their total disappointment and disenchantment with the Jammeh administration. One Mr Seedy Bojang , a resident of Suma Kunda said that Yahya Jammeh is trying to rule The Gambia any how he wants, alleging that Jammeh is now giving all the big posts to his tribesmen and close friends. “This is unfair . Everybody is seeing this and we are not doing or saying anything against it ” he stressed.

Another visibly-looking angry youth, Lamin Sanneh said that it is wrong for President Jammeh to be firing people without genuine reasons. “ He has no respect for us . Brikama is a big town and Chief Santa Bojang is doing extremely well in job . So how can Jammeh do this,? He posited

Kebba Manneh of Nyambai said he has no sympathy for Chief Santa Bojang for what had happened to him, as he accused him of being always in the front line of every bad issues that happens in Brikama. “what goes around comes around ” he stressed. Meanwhile Dembo Santa Bojang is still the chief of Kombo Central but removed as the paramount for Western Division.

Chief Bojang was among the group of elders who stormed the State House, during the transition period, calling on President Jammeh to contest the 1996 controversial Presidential elections. Bojang was among the dancing elders who endorsed Jammeh’s candidature. He was very instrumental in shaping the affairs of the APRC in Brikama.

The Gambian leader has today disgraced him by publicly announcing his removal as a paramount chief for the region. The disgraced chief could be heard telling his supporters “ Allabetayata. Nyaallamuta. Abaybaybetteyala.” Meaning lets continue put our faith in god. Everything is going to be alright.

The chief declined to comment for now. He is currently nursing the rudest shock of his life.
