The Gambia’s secretary of State for Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs, Sheikh Omar Faye, is at the centre of a storm, as marriage row between certain Omar Adams and one Ms Njie deepens.Mr. Adams was today at the Kanifing Cadi Court, where he summoned Ms Njie for breach of trust and other related matters. Ms Njie, a resident of Sinchu Baliya, was today served with summons to appear before the cadi court on Thursday to answer allegations levelled against her by Mr. Adams. It’s likely that the cadi court would also subpoena SoS Faye to clear himself from allegations that he had consummated a marriage with Ms Njie when the latter was in fact married to Mr. Adams.

Mr Adams, accompanied by a three-member delegation, today told the cadi court at Kanifing that he had sent over one million dalasis to Ms Njie as his wife to construct a house.

“But to my consternation, she built the house and put her daughter’s name on the title deed. To compound the matters, I later learnt that my wife was married to Omar Faye. I cannot, no matter how I try, understand this. But Shariah would take its course,”he posited.

But it’s not clear what kind of penalty awaits both Faye and Njie if they are found culpable by the cadi court. Under the  Shariah law, adultery is punishable by death but Shariah is not practiced in The Gambia. The Islamic court is empowered to end the said marriage and also fined any of the parties found wanting. Under Sharia law, if the woman decides to end the marraige without compelling reasons to justify such an action, the Cadi court can order her to pay the “DAWREE” and all other expenses provided by her husband. The court can however, award her child support allowance if it deems it necessary.

“What’s interesting about  this case is that Omar Faye married a married woman. Faye told his relatives that the woman never disclosed to him that she was married to Adams. For Faye, he got the impression that the woman was single, which was far from the realities on the ground. One, the woman either decided to hide her marital status to lure the Minister into the relationship or the whole affair was calculated to end  Adam’s martrimonial life. What’s evident is that many women whose husbands are  in abroad engaged in such practices. They try to hide their marital status for reasons best known to them. The unlucky women got impregnated by the likes of Faye, who uses money to lure them into risky behaviours. We have bunch of such cases here. Couples are no longer honest to each other these days. We hear all kinds of stories in our courts.”said a court staff.

According to the court staff, the problem is often blame to long absence from the country by one of the parties.”Some of these women have been staying for more than five, ten, twenty years without setting their eyes on their husbands. I’m not saying that this was what obtained on Mr.Adam’s case, but the fact of the matter is that some of the women usually conceal their marital status just to meet their individual desires. Some parents also contributed to the problem by telling them not to wait for their husbands, who are in  overseas. That their husbands would only waste their time for nothing. A majority of these marriages  end up tearing apart.”said the court official.

Disgruntled Mr.Adams says he wants his property back. His lawyer had filed papers in the Gambian courts to revoke the title deed, which he accuses his former wife of stealing. The High Court has powers to preside over the said high profile case. While the Cadi court is yet to decide the marital dispute case between the two former couples, many observers are keenly following the case, which involves a Gambian Minister. Mr.Faye has been accused of conspiring with his new wife to dupe Mr.Adams.

“Wife snatching is not common in the Gambia, but Minister Faye has set the pace for other would be wife snatchers.”said a Gambian, who accuses Faye of being a confirmed womaniser. The matter is expected to be heard Thursday at the Kanifing Cadi Court.

In another development, a member of the Adams family, has emailed this paper accusing the disgraced Minister of trying to conspire with  Mr. Adam’s ex wife to take his hard earned property. Below is the email sent to our news room. Please read on…
Omar faye married Ndey Njie for these reasons: –to support her through the court case- Ndey made him believe that there is money to be made, by taking the ex- husbands properties. The ex- husband worked very hard for what he has. Omar faye does not have a compound and while ndey’s ex husband was sending money to build his property omar was telling people that it is his place!!!!!!  He is driven by greed and fear that Yahya Jammeh know about it, thus he got married.   Yalla nde leh wut. Time will tell on this story of greed and betrayal.
I have more things to tell you on Omar Faye. The hearing for omar faye and the new wife with the ex-husband is this Thursday. Ida Drammeh is representing the ex-husband. Omar is using all threats on the ex-husband to LEAVE HIS COUNTRY Gambia or else. You need to let Gambians know about these threats. Omar Faye is very nasty. ……………………………………………

As the Omar Faye, alleged extramarital sex scandal escalates, we thought it imperative to expose the previous emails we received from a concerned Gambian who earlier insisted that his letters against Omar Fye should be published. Mr.Faye has been accused of infecting a Gambian woman with sexually transmitted disease known as (STD) by the writer. Although, Faye was indisposed at press time for reaction. Mr. Faye is free to defend himself if the thinks that what the writer reported is unfounded. Please read the emails, we received for the past couple of months.

Mr Editor, How are you getting on with your enquiries on my previously email, of Omar Faye abusing his position and acting the hypocrite with religious leaders, when infact he is still an adulterer fornicating with Ndey Njie a married woman, and infecting her with an STD. As I said previously you can check this story with Ebou Njie, Ndey’s father or even Ndey’s mum, who was so distressed with omar’s actions she was admitted to hospital.   Kind Regards.

Mr. Faye is a public official and therefore have no private life. He ought to behave well to avoid being exposed in the media. The Management of the Freedom Newspaper would be more than glad to accomodate a reaction from Omar Faye, whose image has been dented by these latest allegations ever brought against a government minister.
Meanwhile, some cabinet Ministers who spoke to this reporter have called on the President to act in a bid to save the image of his government. “Minister Faye needs to be suspended until the said case is over. The government’s image is being shattered because of his unprofessional conduct. This is a small country, where people are closely related. How can he do this, without taking into account about the implications of such a move. The young man has done the right thing by resorting to court. The President needs to set an example. Some of our colleagues are in the habit of abusing their positions. Omar Faye is one of them.” said the concerned Minister who wished not to be named.

Currently faced by  image problem, Omar Faye is poised to appear before the Islamic Cadi court anytime soon. Many Religious leaders in Banjul have expressed shock about what they called Omar’s low life.” He has betrayed the Fayens. This was not the Omar Faye we brought up. The least we expect from him was to unite the two couples and not to hijack their marriage. This is unIslamic and morally unacceptable. I for one, I’m disappointed by Omar’s misconduct.” said a religious leader in Banjul.

Minister Faye has been accused of wife snatching and also unethical misconduct. Legal luminaries in the West African country said the Minister risked facing criminal charges in view of what they called the seriousness of the case.”The office of the Inspector General of police is mandated to investigate cases of this nature. There is some element of abusive of office, considering the nature of the alleged crime. The plaintiff is charging death threats allegdly  coming from the Minister. The police can intervene if they want to. The plaintiff can also register a complain against the Minister since he is being threatened with death. The government should not bury the case under the carpet. It’s a serious case. Here is a poor boy being persecuted in his own country. He has all rights to resort to court.”said a Gambian lawyer who spoke to the Freedom Newspaper.
