Breaking News:Senegalese Custom Officers Finally Get Respite,As Court Releases Them On Bail!

The five Senegalese custom officers who were reportedly intercepted in the
Gambian territorial waters with firearms were today granted bail but would
return to the Kanifing Magistrates` Court for the continuation of their
The men have, until today, been held under custody at Mile Two in Banjul
following their arrest. They were early last month arrested in Bakau by men
from the Gambia Naval Staff while on their routine sea patrol.
The Senegalese officers are now charged with possession of firearms as well
as importing them into the country.The counsel for the men,Antouman Gaye,
this afternoon informed the court that there was a declaration signed
between The Gambia and Senegal, though he fell short of enumerating the
contents of the document.
The State Counsel for her part, said she had no objection to Mr Gaye`s
attempt to tender the document in evidence but that the document was written
in French and should therefore be made understandable to all. Mr Gaye could
not therefore tender the document.
The case, presided over by Pa Harry Jammeh, was at that juncture adjourned
to enable Mr Gaye translate the document.
