Breaking News:Gambian police arrest UDP Youth President and head of security Kebba Fatty
Police in the Gambia have arrested a leading political activist Kebba Fatty. Mr.Fatty who is the National Youth President and also head of  security of the opposition National Democratic Party UDP was arrested Monday by security officials numbering about 14. His Brikama house was searched prior to his arrest. No reason has been advanced for Fatty’s arrest. Mr.Fatty is a retired police chief. He used to be the Director of Gambia’s drug squad under the office of the Inspector General of police. Sources reaching this paper say Mr.Fatty wife also harassed by the arresting officers mainly consists of police and some NIA officials. The opposition United Democratic Party has been exposed to numerous harassment by the Jammeh government since its re-election last year. Two of its officials Rambo and Kanyiba are currently held at undisclosed locations by the Gambian state. The government has denied holding the two in a court deposition.

Police sources say Mr.Fatty was being investigated on what they called “bogus security matters” but would not say what the charges were. Mr.Fatty who hailed from Niamina Dankunku has been a strong supporter of the opposition UDP. It’s gathered that the current police DIG Momodou Gaye used to work under him. His arrest has raised concerns in the country. Local observers say the President was posed to provoke the opposition UDP in a bid to get rid of its officials. Political observers have warned about the possibility of National uprising in the Gambia with the government’s unceased harassment and intimidation of political opponents. The arrest of Kebba Fatty is raising eyebrows amongst the rank and file of the opposition.”No one is safe here. The next move is to arrest our leader Ousainou Darboe. We are ready to die if that happens. This nonsense arrest got to stop. We are studying the situation carefully. There is no justification for these arrests.”said a member of the opposition UDP.

Lawyer Darboe was not available for comments, but sources at the UDP Secretariat confirmed the arrest of Kebba Fatty. The Gambia is relatively unstable with reports of armed robberies and unfinished coup and counter coup stories. The Gambian leader has vowed that he is going to rule the West African country for the next 40 years. He says his opponents should give up their Presidential ambition for now, as there is no way he is going to hand over the country to them.  For more on this story, stay tuned…
