Breaking News:Gambia ALERT: Police arrest, maltreat journalist Gambia ALERT: Police arrest, maltreat journalist Fabakarr Ceesay, a reporter of Foroyaa Newspaper, a pro-opposition bi-weekly was on May 18, 2007 arrested and maltreated by six policemen of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU), a Para-military wing of Gambia Police Force while covering a student demonstration.
Ceesay was threatened with death and detained for about forty-five minutes at the PIU headquarters in Kanifing, a district in Serrekunda, Gambia’s largest city before being released.
A Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) source reported that the incident occurred in Serrekunda where, Ceesay had gone to cover a student demonstration. The students were on demonstration to protest the arrest of some of their colleagues.
The source said upon realizing that Ceesay was a journalist, a PIU personnel arrested him, seized his press card and threatened him with a gun saying: Â We can kill you and nothing will come out of it.You journalists are liars and unpatriotic.
