Gambia’s President Arrives in Taiwan!!By Lamin Kinteh

Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh arrived in Taipei, on a five day official visit. His visit followed the recent United Nations decision to reject Taiwan’s request to be admitted into the Global Body. The Gambia was very instrumental in championing Taiwan’s admission into the UN. The UN General Assembly dismisses Gambia’s petition letter signed by other countries to have Taiwan admitted into the UN. The UN maintains that Taiwan was part of Main Land China. But the Islanders insist that Taiwan was a sovereign nation.

This is President Jammeh’s seventh visit to Taipei. Observers believe that his visit was meant to further cement bi-lateral ties between the two countries. That the authorities in Banjul want to assure Taiwan its support at all levels. That Banjul would continue to lobby for Taiwan’s admission into the UN.

Among President Jammeh’s delegation was the recently sacked Foreign Minister Balla Jahumpa and other dignitaries. The Gambian leader who is due home in a week time, was seen off at the airport by the Vice President Isatou Njie Saidy, Speaker Fatou Jahumpa Ceesay and other public officials. A brief guard of honor parade was accorded to him before his departure.

President Jammeh will hold talks with his Taiwanese counterpart Chen Shui-Bian. Their discussion would center on Gambia/Taiwan relationship, UN, investment among other things.

It would be recalled that President Jammeh cancelled his previous Taiwanese trip due to security related problems. It’s appears that Jammeh no longer faces security threats. But security experts had earlier warned against such long trips citing the possibility of the military taking over the country. For unexplained reasons, Jammeh has resumed his unfinished travels. Last month, he was in Free Town to witness President Kurama’s inauguration and this time around he is in Taipei.
