When I saw the press release for this book I knew it was going to be one that I would enjoy, and I was not disappointed. This is the ultimate cook book for the BBQ enthusiast. Jamie Purviace has done a great job of exploring the many diverse techniques that can be used. Weber’s Charcoal Grilling is an oversize soft cover printed on very high quality stain resistant glossy paper, my reviewer copy came packaged in an attractive box and accompanying CD with press information and photographs, I was very impressed with this very classy and professional touch. This book is sturdy enough to withstand significant abuse by the BBQ fan in your family. There are 115 recipes presented, and what I found interesting was the way Jamie assembled them; each section contains the recipes of a well known barbequer.  Each recipe is accompanied by some mouthwatering photography. This is a book that is guaranteed to make you hungry.

Of course my problem was, how do you review a cook book? Well I am the proud owner of a Weber BBQ, and the weather was nice (a rare occurrence in the Calgary area), so I decided to take weber’s Charcoal Grilling on a test drive, and use my long suffering wife Jan as the test subject.

A quick $50 wallet lightening trip to my local Safeway and I was all set. My choice of recipe was ‘Carolina “Red” Pulled Pork Shoulder’, the picture in the book had me salivating, just had to have some. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow, which makes a really nice change. Many cook books have an irritating habit of saying things like ‘add enough whatever to taste’, many people do not know what ‘enough’ is!

The one downside that I found was the 5 hour wait from starting the cooking till actually getting the yummy stuff in my mouth, although I don’t really think it was the books fault. It was truly delicious. Both Jan and I gave it a two ‘forks up’.

I was so impressed that this afternoon I will be putting on my chef’s hat again and trying the Porcini Burgers.  This book is a must have for the BBQ fan, and based on the extremely high quality of the content and the book itself, it is a great bargain. I would love to write more, but I really need to get back to Safeway! Weber’s Charcoal Grilling is available through Amazon, Chapters, Indigo or Coles, and of course in fine bookstores everywhere.
